Dad was born in 1924 on the family homestead in Whitemud District to Frederick and Emma Bienert. He was fifth of a family of eight children. He attended White Mud School until Grade 8 at which time he started to help on the farm. He met Mom in 1946 while he was a farmhand at Hillers and she was a local school teacher living there. Throughout his years, he spent time working in logging, the Leduc and Devon oil patches and brushing before returning to his passion, farming. Mom and Dad married on July 5, 1949. They moved to the Bremner area on rented land and started to farm. The following year, Dad went back to the oil patch and Mom returned to teaching until they could earn enough money to farm full time. This took a year and they returned and never looked back. In 1951, Beverly was born followed by Brian in 1953. Tragedy struck in the fall of 1955 when both these children were killed. Debbie arrived in June 1956 followed by Brad the same year, Rod in 1959 and Derrick in 1961. Mom and Dad remained on the homestead until 1992 when they moved to Sherwood Park.
Dad is survived by his youngest sister, Gladys Matter, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Elza, a daughter and son, Beverly and Brian; a great-granddaughter, Gabriella Sigouin and his siblings, Ruben, Norman, Gordon, Dorothy DeSmet, Ellie Hamula and Ronnie.
Cremation and interment have taken place. A Celebration of Life may occur at a future date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Heartland Community Hospice Foundation, Box 3317, Fort Saskatchewan, AB T8L 2T3.
