Spurgeon’s Obituary
GREEN’S POINT – Spurgeon Francis “Spurge” MacDonald, 87, Green’s Point, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John Dan and Mary Elsie (DeYoung) MacDonald. Spurge began working with his dad, John D., hauling garbage with a horse and wagon, which he later continued with his own trucking business. His “first job” was working for Kenny Leil hauling slab wood. Following, he as employed with the former Hawker Siddeley, Higgins Construction and Town of Trenton. Before there was a rink, Spurge managed the former outdoor rink, spending countless hours flooding to keep the surface smooth, clearing the snow, keeping the fire on in the change room and even tying kids’ skates. In the “new rink”, Spurge was in constant demand to sharpen skates, which he did if paid or not. He was a mainstay for sports in Trenton for over 40 years and in 2019 received honorary recognition from the municipality of Pictou County for his dedication to sport. Spurge was an activist who gave his best to his community. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan and was very fond of his fur baby, Tom Tom. For Spurge, “Life has changed; not ended!”
Surviving are daughters, Debbie and Sharon (Tony), Trenton; son, Edward “Eddie” (Mary), Green’s Point; chosen son, J.B., Amherst; grandchildren, Alan, Shelby, Shane, Darrell, Danny, Sherileigh and Rhonda; chosen granddaughter, Alana; chosen great-grandson, Carmelo; sisters, Isabel Hammond, Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow; Bertha Ryan, Hamilton, Ont.; brothers, Collie (Mary Bell), Little Harbour; Tom, Pictou Landing; sister-in-law, Irene MacDonald, Thorburn; brother-in-law, Jack Hammond, Laggan; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Goldie (Burgess); sons, Ricky “Red Rider” and Allister “Big Al”; sisters, Annie Jane, Lizzie, Mary, Mabel, and Loretta; brothers, William, Joseph, Angus and Dan.
A private graveside service will be held in Christ the King Cemetery, Trenton.
