It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Baba, relative and friend on April 3, 2021. Sonia leaves to mourn her children Randy (Barb) Christopher and Kelly. Lisa (Rodney) Shannon and Jake. LeeAnn (Bill) Tyla (Ross) and Peter. Sonia will be deeply missed by many in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Our dad Lorne has been patiently waiting for 33 years less a day. Sonia was predeceased by her parents Joe and Leana and her brother Lawrence. Although she did not have biological sisters, her sister’s-in-law, Marie and Hilaria were loved and as close as true sisters.
Sonia was extremely proud of her grandchildren and loved hosting her family gatherings. She was a great cook and fed us well with her traditional Ukrainian dishes. Sonia also loved her fur babies Shya, Tucker, Pookie, Pixel and Ted. She was very thoughtful and never forgot a birthday, anniversary, or any special occasion. She always filled her cards with such kind and caring words.
Sonia loved to travel and enjoyed many vacations with her family. She never turned down a romance movie, Chinese food, or a trip to the casino. Sonia treasured her Monday night date with Sue where they would enjoy watching the Bachelor the Bachelorette or Dancing with the Stars. Her latest pastimes were colouring or building puzzles, or just sitting back playing her tablet or watching the W channel.
Sonia was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage. She was a devout parishioner of St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg. Her involvement in the church was extensive in many ways such as organizing and preparing many banquet dinners, singing in the Church choir, and leading the Rosary before Divine Liturgies and other occasions. Our beloved Sonia was a dedicated and active member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada, St. Basil’s Branch for 53 years. From 1968 she was Branch President for several terms but also held various other positions on Branch and Archeparchial levels as well as Vice President Regional including Executive Secretary for the Ukrainian Catholic Council of Manitoba.
A heartfelt thank you to all the care givers at St. Boniface and Deer Lodge hospitals. Many of you went above and beyond to care for our mother.
Virtual service will be held on Saturday April 17, 2021 at 1:00 p.m., through the Saint Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church website: www.saintbasilwpg.ca Rev. Fr. Mykhaylo Khomitskyy officiating.
