Samuel’s Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and much love that the family of Samuel Peter Greene of West Bay Centre, Newfoundland, announce and mourn his passing on September 23rd, 2021 at the age of 83 years, after a quick and sudden battle with cancer.
A beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
Sam will be lovingly remembered by: Mary, his wife of over 51 years;
children: Sammy (Michelle), Jimmy(Elizabeth), Alice(Gerrard), Joey(Karen); grandchildren: Alessandra, Sonya, Jamie, Beth, Christopher, Caitlin and Gina; great grandchildren: Michael and Jonathon; and brothers: Gordon(Patsy), Leonard(Ann) Johnny(Camilla); along with many neices and nephews.
Sam was predeceased by: his parents Edward and Elizabeth; brother Vincent and sister Marie of Lourdes, NL.
After serving in the Canadian Military with the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment, one of his proudest honours, Sam decided to settle down, bought a small piece of land in West Bay Centre for $75, built a house with the love of his life Mary, raised a family and has called it home ever since.
Sam went on to be a fisherman for a few years with his brothers at Blue Beach (The Bar). Then supervised various development projects such as the Blue Beach wharf project which is still being used by fishermen today where he once met and shook the hand of then Newfoundland premier, Brian Peckford.
For many years he worked as a weighmaster for various fish buyer groups and enjoyed chatting with the local fishermen on a daily basis. This was just a few of the jobs he tried his hands at over the years to earn a living and remain within his community.
Sam was a member of numerous councils and commitees including the Port-au-Port Development Committee, West Bay Community Centre, President of the Blue Beach Fisherman’s Committe and others.
Sam was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus where he served with his brothers.
Those who met Sam knew he was a stand up and honorable man and a bit of a torment and jokester if he liked you. He would give you the shirt off his back and would help you in any way. Always had a great sense of humor.
Just dont mess with his darts which was his passion; competitively in tournaments traveling around the atlantic provinces, winning championships, local leagues, or just for fun at the house, Sam was always ready to play and always had a set of darts near him. A passion that he shared with his wife Mary for many years together.
He also enjoyed playing softball over the years and the many friends he met along the way.
Sam especially enjoyed the weekly Sunday family dinners at his mom’s house in Lourdes where all of his brothers and sister with their children would meet after Church. They talked, laughed, ate great food and played cards slamming their fist on the table for hours. Those were some of his most cherished memories with his family.
Sam was a supporter of many charities including cancer research, St Anne Church, Red Cross, Heart and Stroke, church parishes, animal shelter groups and just about anyone who asked he would try and help.
Service.
It was Sam’s wish that no funeral service be held in his honour until such time that the love of his life Mary is able to join him.
It is both their wish to have a double funeral service and their ashes be buried together.
A mass in Sams honour will be held at Piccadilly Parish on Sunday October 3rd at 10:30 am.
The family would like to send a special thank you to all who helped and assisted Sam fight his toughest battle during these past few weeks.
Dad, Poppy, Sam, you will be missed, cherished and loved forever.
