SMART, Sally Alexandra
On January 11, 2021, Sally Smart, formerly of St. Albert and Westlock, passed away at the Dr. Gerald Zetter Care Centre in Edmonton at the age of 92 years. She was predeceased by husband Bill in 2005 and will be deeply missed by her children Wes (Kathy) of St. Albert, Rick who currently resides in Shanghai, and Val Chow (Colin) and Sandy (Richard) of Edmonton, along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who live in Edmonton and Johannesburg, South Africa. Sally’s forbearers ( Zahary and Morie families) settled in the area of Andrew and Lamont at the turn of the 20th century. Sally graduated from the U of A Normal School program in 1948, going on to teach in one room schools at Gladwyn, Larkspur, and Sunniebend, where she met Bill. In addition to teaching, Sally later became the librarian at the Westlock Junior High School for several years. Bill and Sally lived in the Westlock and district area, with close ties to the farming communities, until retiring to St Albert in 2000. Sally volunteered extensively in the community, including with the Westlock United Church Women, the Westlock & District Agricultural Society and the Salvation Army Community Thrift Shop. Sally was an avid gardener who loved her trees, and was at her best hosting family events and playing and working with children. She was a lively, charitable and hardworking person known for her personal strength in the face of adversity. In her last years she overcame many challenges presented by an affliction of Alzeimer’s and in the last month, the Covid 19 virus.
Due to COVID-19 a funeral will not be held. Sally will be laid to rest with Bill at the Westlock cemetery after a private family service at a later date.
