Ruby’s Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Ruby Marcella DeMings on June 23, 2021. Mom was born on McNutt’s Island on May 5, 1932, the daughter of the late Douglas and Annie (Snow) Rennehan. Mom went to school on the Island to the 10th grade and then to Shelburne for grades 11 and 12. She taught school on the island at the age of 17.
On June 25, 1949, Mom married our father, Francis Johnston DeMings. They had 15 children together – 10 girls and 5 boys.
Once the children were grown, Mom worked at Roseway Hospital as a Dietary Aid for 13 years.
Surviving are her children: James (Louise), Ester (Lendell), Ellsworth, Anna, Danny (Julie), Laurel (Kenneth), Celia (Perry), Sonia, Wanda (Richard), Violet, Kevin (Anita), Vincent (Annette), Joan (Earl) and Penny (Greg), 23 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
Mom is predeceased by her husband Francis of 50 years, daughter Doris, great-granddaughter Quinn, brothers Richard and Eugene and sister Bernice.
Mom was known for having a green thumb and could make anything grow. She loved crocheting and knitting for the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved animals, going for drives and game shows. She volunteered in the community and was a lifelong member of the St. Paul’s United Church.
Mom lived for her family and was a “mom” to all the children in the neighbourhood. She was one in a million and we were so blessed to have her in our lives for so long. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 58 Buckley St., Shelburne, where visitation will take place Friday June 25, 2021 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A private committal service will take place at a later date in Carleton Village Cemetery.

Our family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at Roseway Hospital and Yarmouth Regional Hospital for the care and compassion shown to Mom and the family.
