It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Courtney, 69, who passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born March 23, 1952 in Burnt Islands, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Robert and Sarah (Hardy) Courtney.
He loved to be on the sea, from his early steamship days to his later years commercial fishing. He was founding member of the NOSFA, advocating for local fishing and making great friends along the way. He remained loyal to the organization until he could no longer.
He could always be found phone in hand chatting about anything and everything, with a story to tell and an ear to listen. As much as he loved fishing, what he loved the most was spending time with his grandchildren and being a Grampy.
Robert is survived by Louise, his partner of 31 years, and the children and grandchildren they shared together, daughter Trena (Mitch) and their children Lily, Mary, and Jimmy, son Russell (Marika) and his daughter Mya. He also leaves behind his daughters Lori (Jason) and their children Jason, Josh, and Emma, Sherry (Scott) and their children Aiden and Ryder, Carla (Gavin) and their children Aubree and Nathan, son Raymond.
Robert is also survived by his sister Deanna (Tom) and their children Heather and Hillary, nephew Scott, and special Aunt Clara, who he adored.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by sisters Marilyn and Florence, and nephews Godfrey and Peter.
On behalf of the family, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff of Buchanan Memorial Hospital for taking care of and making his stay the last few months as comfortable as possible.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, August 10, at 1:00pm at the Aspy Bay United Church, with Rose Mary Algar officiating.
