Reverend Father Cyril Andrew Mykytiuk OSBM 2021

Obituary for
Reverend Father Cyril Andrew Mykytiuk, OSBM
Rev. Fr. Cyril Andrew Mykytiuk, OSBM died peacefully at Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton, AB on Tuesday, June 1, 2021.
Born Andrew Mykytiuk, on October 15, 1936 in Holden, AB, he entered the Basilian Novitiate in Mundare, AB on October 4, 1954 and made his Solemn Profession of Vows in the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat on September 13, 1959.
He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on July 21, 1963 by Bishop Neil Savaryn, OSBM in Vernon, BC. Fr. Cyril dedicated much of his priestly life to the education of young Catholics enrolled in the Order’s High School, St. Basil-The-Great College School, in Weston, ON, first as a teacher of physics, geology, and math, and then as the School’s Vice-Principal.
After retiring from the School, Fr. Cyril served for many years as Pastor at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine in Ottawa, ON, during which time he oversaw the project of installing the beautiful iconography and stained-glass windows in the church, right from the project’s initial conception through to its completion. He was also a skilled handyman and spent countless hours working on plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance projects at the parish’s summer camp as well as the Order’s homes.
In his spare time, Fr. Cyril enjoyed painting and photography, writing Ukrainian Easter eggs (especially with the aid of his own invention for drawing even and precise circumferential lines on the eggs), as well as tending to and acquiring specimens for his extensive rock and mineral collection.
Fr. Cyril served the Canadian Province of the Basilian Order of St. Josaphat as Provincial Consultor (2004-2008), and for several years as the local Superior of the St. Gregory of Nyssa monastery in Weston, ON.
Fr. Cyril is survived by his brothers, Lawrence of Victoria, BC; Ambrose of Vancouver, BC; and Basil of Thousand Oaks, California; along with their respective families. He was predeceased by his parents, Phillip and Nancy Anastasia (nee Wynnyk) Mykytiuk, and his brother, Alexander. From his family, there were two religious vocations: his uncle, Rev. Fr. Ambrose Wynnyk, OSBM, and his aunt, Sr. Marcella Wynnyk, SSMI, both deceased.
Monastic Parastas will be celebrated with a limited number of people in attendance at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mundare, AB on Sunday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, June 7 at 10:00 a.m., also at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, with interment to follow in the Basilian Order’s section of Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Mundare, AB.
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, in-person attendance at the funeral services will be by invitation only, however, the services will be livestreamed and can be accessed through Father Cyril’s Book of Memories at parkmemorial.com.
Donations in memory of Father Cyril Mykytiuk, OSBM may be made to the Education of Basilian Priests, c/o Basilian Fathers, 737 Bannerman Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R2X 1J9.
God grant Father Cyril eternal rest and entrance into the eternal happiness where all the saints repose! Vichnaya Pamyiat!
