Obituary for
Polly Po Ying Yu
It is with great sadness the family announces that on April 21, 2021 Polly Po Ying Yu passed away peacefully in Edmonton, AB at the age of 71 years.
Polly will be remembered by her mother, Yung Sau; younger sister, Grace; younger brothers, Dannis, Shi Cham, Si-King, Shiman and Walter; God-son Matthew; and many other family members and friends.
Polly was born in China and grew up in Hong Kong, moving to Canada at the age of 24 where she studied graphic design. A talented person, skillful particularly with her hands and a keen eye for colours, craftmanship and quality, Polly exceled in many artistic areas like knitting, sewing, gardening, jewelry design, interior design, drawing and painting, to name a few.
Polly was active in many community groups and served as mentor to many serious knitters and gardeners. A passionate volunteer, Polly was member of the Women’s Auxiliary at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, participated in the revival of the Ted & Lois Hole Healing Garden and creation of Vivian’s Garden, in honour of the half-century service of Vivian Mendes at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Polly was also an entrepreneur- founder of Knit and Purl, one of the few knitting yarn shops in Edmonton known to many avid knitters. Polly retired the business several years ago and it is still missed by many knitters.
A Funeral Service for Polly will be held at Park Memorial on Saturday, May 22, 2021 at 10:30 a.m., with burial to follow at Beechmount Cemetery.
In lieu of other tributes, charitable donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
