Obituary
Oliver peacefully passed away on Sunday February 14, 2021. Oliver was born to his loving mother Beulah and father Robert Dunbar in Arcola, Saskatchewan and was raised in Calgary. His memory will be cherished by his sister Laurie and brother Bob, along with his nieces Katie, Maya and Cyrena; his nephews Bruce and Murray; and spouses Bonnie, Leslie and Kathy. Oliver trained as a ballet dancer in his teen years and had a successful career dancing, acting and performing in numerous stage and television productions in London (England) and Europe. In his thirties he returned to Calgary and began working in our father’s accounting business. He became a Certified General Accountant through night school at SAIT and together with his brother Howard took over our father’s accounting business.
Oliver’s love of the Arts never left him; there was a running score of classical music playing in his mind whenever he was at rest. He loved Opera and joyfully attended many live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera, the National Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet with friends. He also enjoyed silk screening and did a number of pieces centered on the work of Andy Warhol and other favorite artists. He was a world traveler throughout his life, seeking beauty and often the sun!
Oliver began his 39 years of sobriety in 1982 and joined the Front Runners group of AA. He will be remembered by his friends made in the group, who say that: “Oliver always talked about the brighter side of recovery and how he loved life. His story of sobriety and how he lived, helped shape how many of us chose to put our program of recovery into practice.”
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to David, whose friendship was unwavering through Oliver’s decline into Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Jingle, Karen, the staff at Intercare Brentwood and Staywell Manor, who all cared for Oliver, are also very much appreciated for their grace and compassion. Oliver’s life will be celebrated when we are all able to gather in person.
