Nan Budding Saturday June 5th 2021

Nan Budding née Hogeveen
February 20, 1935 – June 5, 2021
Nan was born in 1935 in the Netherlands and emigrated at age 18 with her family to Canada in 1953. Nan married the love of her life, Hubert Budding, in 1955 and started their family in Montreal. In 1968, Nan and her family moved from Montreal to Ontario where her husband Hubert pursued a career in teaching and Nan continued to manage the busy, young household.
Their beliefs and understanding of the Christian world-view and living in faith led Nan, Hubert and their family to join with a number of like-minded families in starting a Christian community in Eastern Ontario where Nan and Hubert opened a restaurant–The Supper of the Lamb. Their faith was put into practice in the menus and food offered, the relationships they had with the customers and the way in which they carried out the day-to-day business.
In 1988, Nan and Hubert moved on to other service as missionaries in Nepal for the Presbyterian Church of Canada. They returned to Canada in 1998.
For the next 20 years, following their retirement to Toronto and Hubert’s death in 2003, Nan kept busy with many volunteer activities: at her condo community of the Distillery District, at the Evangel Hall Mission, at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Soulpepper Theatre Company and in the congregation of St. John’s Presbyterian.
In addition, Nan had a busy family life, keeping up with her five children, 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren as well as her own sisters, brothers and extended family. She loved family get-togethers and birthday celebrations and hosting out-of-town family when they made the trip to Toronto.
In her final years Nan began to experience some medical issues but continued to stay active and even start new friendships as she moved to the Holland Christian Homes retirement complex in Brampton. Prior to Covid 19, Nan enjoyed participating in the knitting and crocheting club and other offerings of the retirement home. She never let Covid 19 stop her completely, continuing to walk around the block–physically distanced–with her exercise friends and get out when and where she could.
Nan’s compassion and caring for the disadvantaged and needy as well as her love for her family was always evident. She was an example and inspiration to us all. She will be sadly missed by many.
Predeceased by her beloved husband, Hubert Budding (†2003).
