He will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by Helen, his loving wife of 25 years and children Mitchell, Melissa, Matthew, Meghan, grandchildren – Lauren and Adrienne, great grandson – Keighan. Sisters Tina and Michelle, Stepmother Sharon, Brother in laws – Vincent (Elaine) and David, Sister in law – Robyn (Stephen). He leaves behind a huge extended family, numerous friends and fur babies, Abby and Tippy. He was predeceased by his parents Llewellyn (Del) and Blanche (J’anne) Deleplante, Helen’s parents Marguerite and Vincent Sr. LaPierre and Tina’s husband, Terry Kennedy.
Mike was the love of Helen’s life for over 25years; he was her best friend; her confidant; her calm to any storm; her life. Their love and respect for each other was seen by all who knew them as they truly were in step with each other. Mike was very protective and loving of his family and would listen patiently to all and would dole out thoughtful insights and advise.
Mike was born on September 27, 1963 in Kemptville, Ontario to parents Llewelyn and Blanche (nee Reynolds) Delaplante. Mike was a quiet child and enjoyed a good snuggle and a read with his mother, and in those quiet moments, he developed a love of reading. He and his mother were nicknamed the “bookends” as you would frequently find them at either end of the couch reading together throughout his entire life. Growing up, Mike played sports, guitar, curling and enjoyed hanging out with friends, but he was dazzled by STAR WARS. This began a lifelong love affair with science fiction, super heroes and role–playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons and Mike surrounded himself with friends with similar interests.
Mike wore many hats over the years. He took the LPN course after graduating high school then learned how to be a short order cook, but neither were his passion. Mike had a brief stint in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Royal Canadian Regiment VRI. Following that, he enrolled at Mount St. Vincent University for an English Major and Teaching Degree, as was his hopes of teaching English in Japan. While there, he worked in the IT department. Following university, Mike worked in numerous fields, like Converges, SGS, and Commissionaires Nova Scotia, until health concerns forced him to retire early. Mike had many hobbies. He loved video games, wizard games and anything that involved Japan. He collected swords and different memorabilia. He loved ACDC and was a wicked dancer. He was well respected within the motorcycle community. But most of all, Mike loved to read. He enjoyed the mystery and the tales and the escape that a great story could give him.
Growing up Mike was bigger than most kids, and didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He often felt alone, or misunderstood, but that all changed when he met and married his wife, Helen. With her, he had “HIS” family and he loved her kids as if they were his own. He went from being called “Mikey” to “Dad”, and then to being “Grumpy” and then “Great Grumpy” and he loved every minute of it. He had a very big heart and generous soul. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it and helped whenever and wherever he could.
Mike and Helen loved going to the beaches and explored and camped around the shores of Nova Scotia and PEI. He designed their wedding rings to reflect their love of the ocean. Helen took him into her passion of fundraising for the “Ride for Sight”. They loved going to the Wharf Rat Rally to socialize and camp behind the Vets and close to the Dairy Queen”. And when Helen got it into her head to make his Mom a garden bed for her 70th birthday, Mike was at the ready with his shovel in hand. What he didn’t know is that it wouldn’t stop at one garden, it morphed into a “yearly” project of yet another and another. To which he was volun-told to dig yet more holes, to earn the nickname “the Gopher”. But he just smiled thru clenched teeth and dug. The results of their labour is a beautiful yard of flowers and bushes. Helen even got Mike to join her making quilts for charity. He had a great eye for colour and stitched straight seams. Mike enjoyed Tim’s coffee and could be found at 5 Corners or Main Street drinking coffee – reading or gaming on his phone while Helen chattered with the girls. Mike enjoyed spending time with Brother in law David, watching movies and going for drives and coffee. He was respected and loved by many.
His compassion, unconditional acceptance and love; kindness, gentleness, a sense of humour; and living each day to the fullest. These are gifts we will forever treasure and carry in our hearts. It is with sad hearts that we have to say goodbye too soon to our gentle bear of a man. You will be greatly missed by many.
The family would like to thank Dr. Nagaraju Sannidhana – “Dr. Nag”; the First Responders; the staff of the Dartmouth General Emergency Room; the Cardiac Cath Suite, and CCU at the Halifax Infirmary for your valiant efforts on Mike’s behalf and your compassion and understanding on our behalf, with the passing of our loved one.
A “Celebration of Life” will be held once Covid restrictions have been lifted enough to allow all the family, extended family and numerous friends to gather. On-Line condolences may be left on the Dartmouth Funeral Home Ltd website at dartmouthfuneralhome.ca Should you choose, donations in memory of Mike can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association of N.S.
