Obituary
On Tuesday, December 28, 2021, Maurice Ogden completed a full and active life at Moog and Friends Hospice, Penticton. He was 90. Maurice was born in Oldham, England, on May 20, 1931.
In spring 1957, Maurice met Marion at a tennis course in Buckinghamshire. On December 20, 1957, they married in Livingstone, Rhodesia, where they had Meryl and Russel. Glynis, their third child, was born in Penticton.
Maurice did military service for Britain (1952 – 53) in the Korean War.
Maurice earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1965 from University of South Africa. Prior to this, Maurice had begun a lifelong career as a schoolteacher, first in Tanzania where he learned Swahili, then Rhodesia, Alberta, and finally Penticton. In the late 1960’s, while at Carmi Elementary, Maurice introduced the concept of inter-school soccer competition, which later expanded to many sports in neighbouring school districts.
In earlier times, Maurice enjoyed sailing and playing rugby, eventually retiring the boat and boots to pursue International Rugby, as spectator. Maurice was a leader and organiser, teaching youth and adult tennis lessons, managing tennis tournaments, coaching soccer, and volunteering with the Penticton tennis clubs for decades. He was a purist at tennis, playing in classic whites.
Before he was 10, Maurice could swim a mile. Widely traveled, Maurice sought out holidays that permitted opportunity to swim in open water. Maurice was very thoughtful and patient, and he applied these qualities to the arts of calligraphy, soapstone carving, rock wall building, and woodworking. He enjoyed gardening, and always looked forward to eating freshly harvested new potatoes.
Maurice is predeceased by his father Tom and mother Alice, and older brothers Norman and Neville. He is survived by his wife Marion; Meryl (David); Glynis (Kevin), grandchildren Emma and Noah; and Russel, grandchildren Alexandra and Meghan.
