Obituary for Mary Micetic
Mary Micetic – April 3, 1919 to April 23, 2021
It is with a heavy heart we announce that Mary has passed away at the age of 102. Mary is survived by her Daughter Margaret (Gary), 5 Grandchildren Shannon, Jenefer, Christopher (Melodie-Joy) , Leigh and Cheryl as well as 5 Great-grandchildren Jaden, Ashia, Tristan, Lawson and Anna-Belle and many nieces and nephews.
Mary MacDougall was born in Inverness, Cape Briton. At the age of 5 she contracted Spinal Meningitis, and lost her hearing. At the age of 9, Mary attended the School for the Deaf in Halifax and made many close friends that she kept in contact with. It was at this school that she learned to cook, sew, knit and of course, sign. Mary moved to Toronto in 1946 where she met the love of her life Ben and they raised two children, Bill who has since passed along, and a daughter Margaret. She loved having family gatherings and in their tiny house where she would prepare wonderful meals and make everyone feel welcome.
After Ben’s passing Mary moved into a condo but eventually moved into the Bob Rumble Centre for the Deaf where she thrived. She made many friends, winning at cards and bingo games, bowling, walking in the seniors annual race, watching her beloved Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays and sharing stories and photographs of her family. Her close friends will always remember her laugh, her smile, her wit and unforgettable competitiveness.
Mary faced many challenges in her life, but always kept her faith and she always found the blessings all around her. Mary was beloved by all who were fortunate enough to know her. She made the world so much brighter.
In 2019 Mary celebrated her 100th Birthday. Friends and family travelled from all over Canada to celebrate this milestone and there were over 135 people in attendance. Mary often spoke about the fond memories she had of all those that attended to celebrate Mary’s life. One cannot imagine a more fitting celebration of a life lived to its fullest.
Her story, her legacy will live on in her friends and family. She will continue to inspire us all and she will be greatly missed.
Cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will take place in the near future.
A special thank you to Dr David Shergold for taking such good care of Mary, Also to all the Staff at the Bob Rumbell Centre who made Mary’s life so special. Buf and Nanci Hooey for always being there. And to the staff at North York General Hospital your care was greatly appreciated in this difficult time.
