Mark Douglas LeMaiste – Retired Inspector, R.C.M.P.
1953 – 2021
Mark passed away May 6th, 2021 at the age of 67 years. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen, and their children Jill Stobart (Mike), Scott LeMaistre (Christine) and grandchildren Iris and Elliot Stobart and Theo LeMaistre. He is also survived by his siblings: Arthur (Maddie), Jim (Maureen Collier), Anne Kapitan (Tim), Mary Schluter (Siert) and Susan LeMaistre, sister-in-law Liz LeMaistre and brother-in-law Malcolm Timlick (Heather). He is predeceased by his parents John and Suzanne LeMaistre and his brother, Dave (Liz).
Mark was born in Winnipeg Sept. 4, 1953. He graduated from Kelvin High School and attended the University of Manitoba for two years before being called to duty by the RCMP. He graduated from Depot Training in Nov. 1977 and during his 36 years career, he was posted to Indian Head, Mossbank, Kindersley, Regina, St. Walburg and Creighton, SK. He then changed Divisions and moved to Manitoba, serving at Winnipeg, Carmen, Headingley and Selkirk, MB. He proudly rose to the rank of Inspector. While in Regina, Mark was given the opportunity to finish his BA degree that he had begun so many years before at the U of M. In 1987 he received a Commendation being instrumental in saving the life of a person with anaphylactic shock. Highlights of his career included his training in VIP security, which allowed him to escort The Queen and Prince Edward on their visits to the province. In addition to his regular duties, he was co-leader of the Saskatchewan Tactical Troop (American equivalent is known as the Riot Squad) and was Incident Commander for the Manitoba Emergency Response Team (American equivalent is SWAT). His involvement with these specialized teams led to trips to the G7 and G8 Conferences, the Summit of the Americas and the Vancouver Olympics. Other RCMP members have described Mark as being respected for his integrity, loyalty and friendship. He retired from The Force in 2014.
Mark was proud of his family and always gave back to his communities. He has been a Boy Scout leader, a Mason, a Shriner, a Rotarian, a coach or manager to numerous sports teams that his children were on, a Board Member to the Kindersley Crisis Centre, the Island Lakes Community Association and the Laurel Centre. He loved to share his woodworking and repairman skills with others. He was a fitness buff – jogging, cycling and weightlifting his whole life. He was a curler and he loved to be outdoors. He was never happier than when he was hunting or fishing, spending long hours in his ice shack or on his beloved boat. He enjoyed several trips to Europe and in retirement spent part of the winter in St. Pete Beach, Fl.
The family would like to thank the staff of HSC CAU, GB2 for their wonderful care and compassion during Mark’s end of life care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or The Laurel Centre.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private memorial service will be held.
