Marjorie Ann Merchant, 99, Sydney.
It is with sadness that the family of Marge Merchant announce her passing in her 99th year on July 21, 2021 at the Cove Guest Home in Sydney.
Bornin Florence N.S. on January 14, 1922, Marge was the daughter of Ben and Annie(Carey) Ross. She married Vaughan Merchant of Sydney in 1943 and together they raised five children. She is survived by her children, Barbara Herald, Pt. Edward, Jean McKay, Halifax, Pauline Sylvain (Marc), Santa Barbara, Calf., Vaughan (Bonnie), Sydney and Ross, Sydney; grandchildren, Craig, Suzanne, Brad and Lynn; Caroline, George, Annie and Catherine; and great-grandchildren, A.J., Haley and Ashley, Christopher, David, Pablo and Violeta. She is also survived by her sister Georgia MacDonald, Tiny, Ont.
She was predeceased by her husband, Vaughan in 1986 as well as her brothers, Alex, Cecil, Eddie, Lloyd, Russell and Charlie, sisters, Margaret Dolhanty, Kay Ryan, Dorothy Stonehouse and Edna Ross and her son-in-law, Stuart Herald.
Marge worked all her life taking pride in each of her jobs including with Canada Manpower, receptionist for Dr. Clem Young, as well many years at the University College of Cape Breton library. She was a former board member of the Sydney Credit Union, a lifelong member of the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club and past-president of the CWL at Immaculate Heart parish. Tireless in all her duties as a homemaker, mother and a community minded leader, she will be missed.
Our thanks and gratitude to Mom’s family at the Cove Guest Home for their compassion and professionalism. There will be private family service at a later date.
