GILBERT, Margaret Evelyn (Lynne) Denholm,
Passed away peacefully at Mariposa Gardens Residence in Osoyoos, BC, on Monday, April 26, 2021, in her 103rd year. Loving wife for 53 years of the late Harold. Cherished mother of Graham (late Bernice), Glenda (Ron) Bauman, Pat (Ray) Smith, Vivian, Meredith (Mike) Brophy, and the late Lorraine. She will be sadly missed by seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Predeceased by grandson Conor Brophy. Fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews.
Evelyn (as she was called by her Denholm family) was born on June 2, 1918 at St. Boniface, Manitoba. Her father’s career with Canadian Pacific Railway later took the family to Calgary, Alberta. Her early career was in teaching, at the Lethbridge Business School, where she also served for a time as Acting Principal, a rare opportunity for women at that time. She met a dashing RCAF lad in Lethbridge, and they were married in 1943. Life as an Air Force family included moves to Charlottetown, Ottawa, Metz France, and back to Ottawa. On retirement, Mom and Dad moved to the sunny Okanagan, where they lived in Kelowna and Oliver.
Lynne, as she was known most of her adult life, loved music and theatre, and appeared in several community theatre musical productions over the years. She was a lifetime, faithful Sister of the Order of the Eastern Star, and rose through the offices of that organization. Her community involvement included volunteering at church, recreation associations, Osgoode Township High School Board, and Metcalfe Agricultural Society. She also held administrative positions in the various communities where she lived, including on Parliament Hill, in the offices of Hon. E.W. (Ted) Brunsden, MP (Medicine Hat) and Hon. Deane Gundlock, MP (Lethbridge).
All the while raising six children with a great deal of love, patience, grace, and humour; and instilling in us a strong work ethic and sense of giving back to our community through volunteerism.
We are thankful for Mom’s happy, productive life, good health, and peaceful passing. “A life well lived” indeed. Due to COVID restrictions, arrangements will be private.
Lynne’s family asks that those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation to the charity of their choice.
