Malcolm (Red) Victor MacFadyen
1934-2021
It is with great sadness that we announce
the passing of our beloved husband, father and Grampie, Malcolm
«Red» Victor MacFadyen on 31 July 2021, at the Pine
Grove Nursing Home. Red suffered from
Alzheimer’s disease for several years. Red is
survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean (Batt), his children Larry
(Alison) and Jenna(Andrew), and was predeceased by his son Donald
William. Red is also survived by his grandchildren David, Monica,
Malcolm, and Isabel, all of Ottawa; three step-grandchildren,
Sara(Adam), Megan(Peter) and James; brothers Archie(Diane)
and Sterling (Cindy); sisters Kaye(Leaman Morrow
dec.) and Thelma(Roy MacInnes dec.) and many nieces, nephews, and
friends. Red was predeceased by his brothers, Melbourne (Eleanor
dec.), and Elmer(Judy).
Red was born June
3rd, 1934 in Rice Point, PEI to the late Donald
and Annie MacFadyen. Red attended Prince of Wales College in PEI and
then went on to the University of New Brunswick where he graduated
with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering in 1962. He began
working with International Nickel in Copper Cliff, Ontario and from
there to U.S. Gypsum in Hillsborough, NB. Red then settled
in Fredericton, NB where he worked for both the Federal and Provincial
governments in various senior positions over the years, retiring in
1994. During his tenure with the Provincial Government, he
returned to UNB where he got his master’s degree in
Engineering in 1973, and attained his lifetime membership from APENB
in 2002.
Red loved sports, participating in basketball, baseball,
hockey, golf, curling, and rugby over the years. He was past
president of the Fredericton Youth Hockey Association and was awarded
the Charles Daigle Memorial trophy for hockey administrator of the
year. Over the years, Red enjoyed numerous rounds of golf at
both the Fredericton and Mactaquac golf clubs as well as skating at
the LBR with friends.
Red was a member of St. Paul’s United Church and
served on the Board of Trustees. Red loved his cats, gardening,
feeding the birds, and playing bridge.
Red will be missed by all who knew him. Always
smiling and laughing and willing to help anyone. Red always
had a story to tell. We will miss those stories.
We would like to thank all the staff at Pine Grove Nursing Home for
their care and compassion over the past several years.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s
United Church on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at 2:00 pm, with an
interment at Forest Hill Cemetery to follow. At the family’s
request, those attending will be asked to wear a mask and maintain
social distancing throughout the service. Donations can be made to the
Donald William MacFadyen Memorial Scholarship Fund at UNB, the Pine
Grove Foundation, or the St. Paul’s United Church
Restoration Fund.
