Magdalen Emeline Patey (nee Cashin)
September 22nd, 1931 – June 29th, 2020
It is with great sadness and the brightest love that the family of Magdalen Patey announce her peaceful passing on June 29th at the age of 88.
Magdalen was predeceased by her husband Gilbert (Bert) Patey; their infant son, Gilbert; parents Mary and Gregory Cashin; brothers Bren Cashin and Gus Cashin, sister Genevieve Cashin, and son-in-law, John Wall.
Magdalen leaves behind a large and loving family of her children, Cynthia Wall (Allan), Paul Patey (Pamela), Carolyn Dolomount (Bern) and Colleen Patey (Neil); her sister Angela Van Humbeck and her brother Ron Cashin; her grandchildren, Jessica Wall (Rachael), Jeffrey Wall (Melissa), Matthew Dolomount (Pixie), Lindsay Dolomount (Mathieu), Brianna Johnson (Matt) and Joel Patey; and her great-grandchildren, John Isaac, Marron, Jack and Reyna; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Magdalen was born in Grand Falls and spent special childhood years with her loving family in Gambo as a self described ‘tomboy.’ She often shared stories of the bond with her parents and siblings and the many happy memories they shared.
Magdalen met her husband Bert in Gander and the young couple married at a small ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts. Magdalen and Bert soon settled in Gander and welcomed 5 children. The family relocated to Goose Bay, Labrador in 1969 where many special years were spent. Magdalen and Bert created a warm and loving home where their children thrived in the many activities they shared. In addition to exploring the Labrador wild as a family, they enjoyed many adventures including travels to Greenland, Europe and across North America.
In 1985, Magdalen and Bert settled into retirement in beautiful Sandy Cove where their house would fill with family. Perfect summer days were spent on Sandy Cove Beach and on Bert’s boat to the little islands of wild roses around Newman Sound. Some of the dearest memories for Magdalen were the road trips she would take with Bert around the nooks and crannies of Newfoundland. To pack a little lunch, hop in the car and explore the beauty of our island was simply perfect, and were treasured memories she carried with her.
Magdalen was a fabulous cook and adored time in her garden. She was an avid reader, so much so that it was difficult to find a book she had not yet read (seemingly before the author even finished it!). Though she loved many works of non-fiction, she was particularly fond of Newfoundland stories and authors. Magdalen cherished her caring community of friends in Sandy Cove and the company of her dearest friend, Mildred King.
Magdalen was generous of heart with a joyful sense of humour and wit. She truly enjoyed the simple things in life; a good chat over tea, Christmas visits with her family and sitting in the bright sunshine on her deck listening to the ocean waves.
Magdalen will be missed everyday and cherished in the lifetime of loving memories she has left us.
If you wish to send flowers in Magdalen’s memory, they can be sent to her home at 34 Barbour Avenue in Sandy Cove. If you wish to make a donation in her name, please do so to a charity of your choice.
A small gathering will be held at Magdalen’s home (34 Barbour Ave) in Sandy Cove on Saturday, July 4th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Friends and family are welcome to visit and physical distancing will be requested. Weather permitting we will hold this gathering outside in the garden.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at Roman Catholic Church, Gambo Sept 10, 2021 at 2 PM, with inurnment after at the Roman Catholic Cemetery .
