Magda Udovc (nee Zupancic)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Magda, on August 27, 2021. Mary Magdalena Zupancic was born in Moravce, Slovenia on August 29, 1934, and died peacefully surrounded by her loving family, at home in Burlington.
Magda and her mother, Paula, fled Slovenia after the Second World War and eventually immigrated to Canada. It was in Hamilton that she met her loving husband Stane Udovc and they married in November 1960. They built a beautiful home in Burlington, where they raised their family. Magda was an extremely kind, generous and caring person, who brought joy and comfort to all who knew her. Family was very important to her and she spoiled everyone with her unending love and affection. Magda was a talented cook who continuously amazed us with her incredible culinary skills. We often joked with her that if she shared a recipe with you, she might “mistakenly” leave out the “secret ingredient” that created her signature taste. Everyone enjoyed her legendary baked goods and delicious home cooking at our many family gatherings over the years. In her retirement, Magda was an avid reader and a talented knitter with a lifelong desire to learn and grow. She also enjoyed travelling with her family and tending her bountiful vegetable garden. Magda was a devout and faithful member of the Slovenian Church and particularly committed to lending her beautiful singing voice to the church choir. Magda will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know her and to love her.
Magda was predeceased by her parents, Paula and Rudy, her husband, Stane (1996), and her first-born child, Stanсik. She leaves behind her children Margaret (John), Andrew (Laura), Daniel (Stephanie) and Ljuba (Justin), as well as, her siblings Rudy (Margaret), Ann (Harry, deceased), Gabrielle (Bob), Bernadette, Ljuba (Michael) and Elizabeth (Phil). Magda was a loving and doting staramama to Liam, Brenna, Isabelle, Mark, Bobby, Rudy, Jonah and Clara. She was a dear aunt to Dana, Kathryn, Greg, Annie, Matthew, Carmen and Matilda. Magda will be missed by all of her many relatives and friends in Canada and Slovenia.
Visitation at Smith’s Funeral Home, Guelph Line Chapel, 1167 Guelph Line, Burlington (905-632-3333) on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, from 5-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Catholic Church, 125 Centennial Parkway N. Hamilton, on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, Burlington. In accordance with provincial regulations, there is a limit to the number of visitors who may attend at one time. In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in Magda’s memory to Good Shepherd Centre Hamilton, Slovenian Linden Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
