Obituary
On December 24, 2021, at the age of 70, Marie Louisa Moffit (Louisa) of Burk’s Falls, Ontario, left this earth to join her love and best friend, Jim Moffit.
She was the beloved daughter of Bernadette Goadec; mother of Monique (James) Brown, Nicole Lippel, Christine (Cindy) Moffit, Julie (Shayne) van Haeften, and Michelle (Rick) Tamblyn; Amma to Melissa (Larry) Marshall, Hilary Bosworth, Jordan Bosworth, Katrina Moffit-Pleasance, Edward (Macy) Tamblyn, Alan (Jackie) Tamblyn, Benjamin Tamblyn, Christopher Tamblyn, Havanna van Haeften, Erika Lippel, Aurora van Haeften, Harlen Lippel, Ally Perry-Moffit, Amaya van Haeften, and Maggie Perry-Moffit; great-Amma to Piper Rochon; and companion to her dogs Lambig and Pitou. She was predeceased by her brother Alan Goadec, and her husband Jim Moffit.
Louisa grew up in Watford, ON. She loved to tell stories of her teenage days, when she would pretend to be a boy so she could enter drag races with her prized mustang. At the age of 17, she met and fell in love with Jim Moffit, whom she married on January 16th 1971 and with whom she would share five daughters and a lifetime worth of love compressed into their years together on earth prior to his death in 2003.
Louisa knew innately and instilled in her daughters that their lives were full of possibility and that their dreams should not be limited by their gender. She told them time and again, with a twinkle in her eye “anything boys can do, girls can do better.”
Louisa was a well-known presence in all the communities in which she lived. She spread her love for children as an ECE in Petrolia, ON. Following Jim’s work and their love for the north, they then moved the family to Emsdale, ON, where for many years, she ran her “Weeza’s Wee Ones” daycare. Her famous storytelling and dramatic character puppet shows brought laughter and excitement to all those who were fortunate enough to experience them. These performances continued to bring smiles to the faces of her 15 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild throughout her life.
As her careers shifted throughout her life, she built strong networks along the way. Her passion for children, people, and community led her into a successful final career in real estate. She loved this work, which can be seen in her smiling face as she hugs her two beloved companions on her billboards and signs found throughout the Almaguin Highlands. One of her favourite pastimes was investigating new woodland listings by hiking every acre with those dogs.
She brought joy to the children of Burk’s Falls for many years, passing out candy on Halloween and distributing candycanes as Mrs. Claus in the annual Santa Claus parade. She loved to dance and sing and could always be found on the dancefloor at a party or during a local night out on the town.
Louisa was a diligent and loving caretaker to her mother, supporting her around the clock at her home until the level of care required her to be moved to a long-term care facility, at which point she and her dogs would drive 90 minutes roundtrip to visit with her mother and tuck her in each night.
This page will serve as a memorial to Louisa. We invite family and friends to continue her love of storytelling and share their favourite memories of her by posting here. In light of the current pandemic, Louisa’s family will memorialize her with a small private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where she received kind and compassionate care.
