Obituary
Leonard Irwin Cowan died in his 93rd year at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, Barrie, Ontario on Sunday, February 14, 2021. He was the loving husband of the late Elizabeth Cowan (nee Rankin); devoted father to his children Dana-Lynn, Martin, and Glenna; much loved Poppi to Randy, Stephanie, Ryan and Bradley; and proud great Poppi to Emma. Leonard began his career working as a geologist at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Years later, being a creative, independent entrepreneur, Leonard, along with his wife, founded the successful L.I. Cowan Mineral Company. When the tornado of 1985 leveled the enterprise, it was the perfect time and opportunity to switch directions and launch the Cowan Mini Storage Warehouse business, one of the first in the industry in the Barrie area. Leonard was an impressive outdoorsman and avid sailor, who was comfortable navigating the gulf stream via the stars, charts, and a tant. A talented boat maker, he crafted a cedar-strip canoe, kayak, and sailboat for his grandchildren providing timelessly-beautiful keepsakes. Leonard loved simple joys: hiking in nature in all four seasons, great books, his harmonica, and the New York Times crossword puzzles. Over the years, Leonard became a very accomplished home chef, much to the culinary delight of his family and friends. He will always be missed, loved and remembered….
“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.”
