Lawrence Dorey
January 26, 1963 – August 8, 2021
The family of Lawrence Dorey is profoundly saddened to announce his unexpected death in the early hours of August 8, 2021, with his wife Laura at his side. He was born to Emily and Henry Dorey in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia, where he spent his youth, lived, and worked until he found himself settling in Thunder Bay.
Lawrence was a teacher and mentor to all, young and old. He was as comfortable in a kitchen as he was building a house, sewing a costume, playing Santa, or painting nails on tiny fingers. A truly eclectic man. A true genius in the art of co-operation, Lawrence will be truly missed by the people he worked with at and through Indigenous Services Canada. His negotiating skills and ability to complete projects was legendary. With his common sense style, he made many friends along the way, and never forgot any of them.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents, Emily and Henry Dorey, and his younger brother Kevin Dorey.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura, and his much adored daughters, Amanda (Billy Vail), Caroline, and Grace. He adored his girls and placed all the tools in their hands, literally and figuratively, for them to live successful and independent lives. His grandchildren, Farron, Sebastian, and Bria Vail were the shining stars in his universe.
He also leaves to mourn his siblings, David (Lisa) Dorey, Terry (Mike) Wambolt, Kathy Newell (Lennie Plumtree), Donna Dorey (Derek Visser), and his father and mother-in-law, John and Brenda Baric, brother and sister-in-law, Steven (Amanda) Baric, and Teresa (Bruce) Hewat. Many nieces and nephews will surely miss their special times reading, chatting, drive-in-movies, and even haircuts, with Uncle Willie aka Uncle “Yoyence”.
His beloved friends, new and old, too many to mention, will surely feel a profound loss when they think of him.
Donations in memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 332 North May Street, Thunder Bay.
