LAURA ISABELLE NEWLAND
Laura was born June 17, 1927, in Leamington, Ontario, and passed away peacefully June 6, 2021, at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket. Loving mother of Michael and his spouse Sophie of York, England. Predeceased by her parents Mary Isabelle (Belle) and Harold Bissell Newland of Leamington. She will be greatly missed by all members of her family, her cat Petal, and friends. Laura was an actor, a dedicated high school teacher, storyteller, and volunteer. She was honoured by the Ontario Government with the Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2007. Her storytelling was to people of all ages, in schools, community centres and hospitals. Laura’s favourite venue was Eglinton Junior School where she told her stories to children from Kindergarten to Grade Five, often accompanied by her papier-mâché puppets inspired by the stories. Laura published a book of family anecdotes Way Back Then in 2015. She is likely storytelling right now… Donations will be accepted by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, in Laura’s memory.
