Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Kevin J. Learning Sr.
Kevin is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pauline; brother, Patrick and family; McCarthy siblings, White siblings, Kevin’s 8 living children, 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, his very close friends and relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws, the Carbonneau’s, the Reddy’s, the Whiteway/King’s, the Whelan/Stewart’s, the Robbin’s, the Butts/Dwyer’s, the Prince’s, the Hiscock’s, the Campbell’s, the Sawler’s, the Devereaux’s, and the Gibson’s.
Kevin was predeceased by both his adoptive and biological parents; adopted sister, Margaret; first wife Frances; one son Peter; great granddaughter Aleigha; sister-in-law Betty; mother-in-law Simonne; brother-in-law Clermont; sister-in-law Claire; as well as his best friends Frank “Muk” Whelan and Wallace “Wally” Robbins.
Dad was a very strong man, very knowledgeable, friendly, a friend to many, funny, the life of the party, most favorite Poppa, adventurer and traveler, Reverend, truck driver, boxer and entrepreneur. He was very proud to be a Veteran of the Korean War. Dad enlisted with the Canadian Army in St. John’s, NFLD in 1951 when the Royal Canadian Engineer Field Squadrons were being formed. He was part of the 4th field squadron and served alongside the PPCLI. He would remove Chinese mines from a minefield in the dark of night to make a safe path for the PPCLI to pass through the field in order to advance.
During his time in Korea, a fellow soldier caught a young boy stealing. The soldier was bringing the boy into the woods to execute him. Dad yelled out “Let the kid go!” The boy who was about 12 years old and was crying aloud like he knew what was going to happen to him in the woods. Dad yelled out again and the soldier stopped, looked at dad and then let the boy go. Dad saved that little boy’s life. Dad did not know the boy but hoped that he had grown up and had a family of his own.
Dad’s presence is greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Dad was loving and so much fun that there was never a dull moment when he was around. He loved hugs and a good conversation or debate. He loved telling stories of history, the books he was currently reading and stories about his life experiences. Most importantly, his family meant everything to him.
A special thanks to Rena and the McCarthy family, to Captain John Legge (Ret’d) and Major Mark Bossi (Ret’d), Vanessa, Ricky, Randy, Claudia, as well as all of the personnel at the Royal Canadian Legion, and to the Veterans who performed The Last Post. A special thank you to all of our family and friends who have given flowers and sent condolences.
