HAND, KATHLEEN
Kathleen Hand, nee Hillier, 92, of Waterloo, Ontario and formerly of Winona and Grimsby, passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital on Friday, June 11, 2021. Beloved wife of the late Clifford Hand (200). Dear mother of Sarah Bandey (Jason) and Mary Hand (Adam). Loving grandmother of Gillian Bandey. Also surviving are many lovely relatives from overseas in England.
Mom was born in Cippenham, Buckinghamshire, England in 1929. She endured the Great Depression and World War II, witnessing the Battle of Britain with her mother (Eileen), from their backyard, before being sent away, for safety, to her maternal grandparents in Wales. As a young adult, Mom gravitated towards caregiving – volunteering in the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, while working as a lab assistant in an aspirin factory, and later for Horlick’s, a malted beverage company. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Cliff. They would marry in 1953, and emigrate to Canada in 1956. Mom worked in retail for some years, as Dad developed a career in electronics engineering and publishing. Sarah was born in 1961 and Mary in 1965. Mom cared for friends and family throughout her life. In particular, when Dad was diagnosed with leukaemia. Mom was his rock. While taking him to medical appointments, she used time in waiting rooms to knit blankets and caps for babies in hospital. Mom was great at knitting, sewing, and needlepoint.
After Dad passed, Mom was diagnosed with angina. In recent years, there had been close calls and visits to the Emergency department. However, she always managed to bounce back. Two weeks ago, Mom had a heart attack, and then complications. Her daughters and granddaughter were able to visit and comfort her, and she was immensely grateful. A special thank you goes out to Doctors Lee, Chen, and Harlick, along with the nursing and support staff at St. Mary’s Hospital Thank you for your kindness and care. The family would also like to thank Dr. Wlodarcyzk, and the staff at Clair Hills Retirement Community, where Mom spent her final years. Everyone Mom encountered there was kind, thoughtful and tremendous at providing care. We cannot thank you enough. At Mom’s request, there will be no service or funeral, and cremation will occur on Monday, June 14th. Donations can be made to St. Mary’s Hospital.
