Kathleen Elizabeth Lauerman, 96 of Edmonton, died May 29, 2021 at Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre – Unit 9Y hospice with family at her side.
She was born in August of 1924, to Isabel Kate McIntosh and John James (J.J.) Kelly in Oyen, Alberta.
Kathleen moved to Olds in 1932 where she completed high school. She then went to Pickering, Ontario in 1944-45 with two of her friends to work in a World War II munitions factory, which provided the Allied forces with a steady supply of ammunition.
She attended nursing school in Edmonton from 1945 – 48 at the Edmonton General Hospital and graduated with a Registered Nurse Diploma with the Class of 1948. This led to a long and successful career in nursing in the Edmonton area.
Kathleen married the love of her life, Dr. Joseph Mathias Lauerman on September 30, 1950. They were married for almost 57 years, with Joseph passing in July 2007. They had 4 children: Elizabeth (Liz), John Joseph (Joe), Peter and Vincent.
She went back to school in 1974-75 and successfully obtained a Social Work Diploma from Grant MacEwan College.
Kathleen worked for many years in health care services with the VON (Victorian Order of Nurses), Community Nursing, and a number of Edmonton hospitals, from which she was able to retire in 1989.
Because she liked to stay active, she was also a dedicated volunteer with several different programs, such as with Meals On Wheels, and the Provincial Museum. She was involved in the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, where she won awards for her dedication and caring nature. She also worked with the City of Edmonton Capital City Clean Up Program where she helped keep the area around where she lived clean of litter until after her 96th birthday. She was one of the oldest members at the MacEwan University Sport & Wellness Centre, which she attended three times a week until she was 94.
Kathleen is survived by her children: Liz (Larry), Joe, Peter (Christine) & Vince (Andrea); grandchildren: James (Willow), Liam & Kiera; great grandchild, Jacob; numerous nieces & nephews.
She was predeceased by husband, Joseph; parents: Isabel & J.J.; brother, Bernie; sisters: Jacqueline & Anna; granddaughter, Jennifer.
Faith, Family, and Friends made up the fabric of Kathleen’s life – a life well lived by a woman who will be missed by many.
The family wishes to send a thank you to the staff at Rosedale Manor for the support, care and compassion she received there for the last 10 years. Also, to the very special team at the Edmonton General Continuing Care 9Y Hospice Unit for their care and compassion in her last days.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions a private Funeral Service is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made out to either the Covenant Foundation, the Mel Miller Hospice, 9Y, or to the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Kathleen Elizabeth Lauerman 2021..
