Joyce was born in Roslin, Ontario, the third of five children of Reverend Harry Reginald Pettem (1893-1943) and Ada Elizabeth Cole (1896-1971). Her father later became vicar of St. John’s Anglican Church in Prescott, Ontario, where Joyce spent most of her youth. Joyce started teaching at a young age in rural Ontario, but her long and rich life took her to many parts of the world. After attending teachers’ college in Toronto, she went to the far north to teach in Aklavic on the Mackenzie delta near the Arctic Ocean. There she met Rev. Jack Fife, and they were married in Winnipeg. They settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where Jack taught students for the Anglican ministry in Emmanuel and St. Chad College, and where they adopted two children, James (Jim) Walter and Constance (Connie) Jean. During this time, Jack took a year’s sabbatical to continue his studies at Oxford University, and the family lived in the beautiful village of Wheatly a short distance from Oxford. A few years after their return to Saskatchewan, Joyce and the family moved to Suva, Fiji, where Jack taught in the Pacific Theological College. The whole family loved the south Pacific, and Joyce worked extensively with Community of the Sisters of the Church, which had a base in the Solomon Islands. Joyce always supported their work both in the Solomons and in Canada. As retirement approached, Jack was very happy to assume duties as priest at St. John’s Anglican Church, Huntingdon Quebec. Some years after her husband passed away, Joyce moved to a residence in Montreal, where she continued to follow the work of her church and to live in her deep religious faith. At her request, the burial will be an intimate service at Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Havelock. Joyce is survived by her son Jim and by Connie’s son Russell.
