Obituary of Jean Joudrey, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia
She was strong to the end. Our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, Jean Marie Joudrey passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on May 5th, 2021.
Born on May 16th, 1938 in Larry’s River, NS, to Bertha and Allan Pellerin, Jean spent her childhood in Larry’s River before moving on to Normal College in Mabou where she obtained her teaching certificate. After a short career as a teacher, she met her love, David Joudrey, and started a family soon after their wedding in 1964. Three kids later and a few moves around New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, they settled into their home on Landrace Crescent in Dartmouth in 1974—and what a home it was. 51 Landrace Crescent was the gathering spot for friends and family, as Jean welcomed them all with open arms. She had very fond memories of her family home, from Sunday family dinners to the epic New Year’s Eve parties from when her children, nieces, and nephews were kids.
Jean’s heart was full of love for her family, and she loved spending time with them more than anything. Be it a holiday dinner, a summer trip to Larry’s River, or a quick visit, Jean was always thrilled to be in the company of her loved ones. The arrival of her grandchildren added great joy to her life. Jean adored spending time with her grandchildren and was beyond proud to watch them all grow up into young adults. She was a very supportive Grammy, attending countless sports games, recitals, and graduations over the years.
Jean was the most kind, patient, and loving person and brought a feeling of comfort to those around her. As a middle child, Jean learned early how to be the peacemaker, and she always stayed true to her gentle nature, never having anything unkind to say about anyone. Jean was a good-humoured woman and enjoyed having a laugh with her family and friends. She enjoyed several hobbies over the years including quilting, yoga, maintaining her beautiful flowerbeds, frying up a mean fishcake, and doing the sudoku puzzle in her morning paper (with CBC News always playing on the radio, of course). Jean was a fan of the arts and enjoyed attending plays and musical events, and was a yearly patron of the Royal Tattoo. As a devoted woman of faith, Jean would never miss weekly mass at St. Thomas More Parish Church.
Jean loved to travel and was fortunate to see many parts of the world. Her favourite and most memorable was her pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Her last trip was to Washington, D.C. in 2018 with her three children, in celebration of her 80th birthday.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dave of 35 years; sister Camilla Avery; and niece Blanche Kenny.
Mom will sadly be missed by children Paul Joudrey (Cyndi), Quispamsis, NB; Jacqueline Fitzgerald (Jeff), Hammonds Plains; and Susan Joudrey (Mike), Dartmouth. Jean will also be missed by brother Wilbert Pellerin (Lyllie), Halifax, and sisters Bernice Evans, Halifax; Esther Pellerin, Halifax; and Margie Robertson (Ralph), Dartmouth.
Grammy will be missed terribly by grandchildren Ian, Charlotte, Megan, Olivia, Haley, Katherine, Paige, and Ryan.
“We love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.”
Special thanks to the staff on 4 East at the Dartmouth General Hospital for the kind and compassionate care.
Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the funeral home website at www.dartmouthfuneralhome.ca. Donations in memory may be made to the Dartmouth General Foundation.
