The family of Hiram Wilfred Thompson are deeply saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at his home of almost 60 years in Port Hawkesbury, after a very brief illness. Born in Westville, Nova Scotia on November 23, 1935 Wilfred was the son of the late Hiram Beverly Campbell and Hazel (Morrison) Thompson.
Wilfred began his career as an accountant in Halifax, with R.B. Cameron Ltd. and later with Canada Packers. While in Halifax, he met Evelyn, who became his wife and constant companion for 64 years. His work with Canada Packers took him to Corner Brook, NL and later to Sydney, Cape Breton. He joined the accounting department at Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. in 1962. Wilfred and Evelyn raised their family in Port Hawkesbury and he completed a successful career as Assistant Accounting Manager at Stora Enso in 1992.
Wilfred was a humble man, whose greatest pleasure was a life well-lived in the company of his children and grandchildren. Although a wonderful mentor, supporter and model for his children, his relationship and his influence with his grandchildren was profound. Grampy and Nanny were actively involved in all aspects of their lives, attending numerous sporting and school events, band concerts, holiday and birthday celebrations, and high school and university graduations. Grampy was a gift they all cherished and their visits, phone calls and family events remained his greatest joy and source of pride.
Although his bucket list was simple, his greatest desire was to travel to his ancestral home in Scotland, a wish that was fulfilled in 2018 for the occasion of Michael and Sarah’s wedding. His love and deep knowledge of historical facts and events was a great source of learning and conversation at all family gatherings. His trip to Scotland was fondly recalled for years to follow.
Wilfred will be affectionately remembered as the consummate gentlemen, the archive of facts, a source of sharp wit and a lover of Craigmore sunsets.
Wilfred is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Pittman), who he had hoped to celebrate his 64th wedding anniversary with in November, on the same day he would have turned 86. He is also survived by his daughter Sharon MacCuspic and her husband Donald, Craigmore, NS; sons David and wife Terri Thompson, Lake Fletcher, NS and Shawn and wife Rosina Thompson, Oakville, ON; cherished grandchildren Carly MacCuspic, New Glasgow, NS; Mitchell MacCuspic, Halifax, NS; Michael (Sarah) Thompson, Larbert, Scotland; Megan Thompson (Felix Hoppe), Halifax, NS; and Connor and Kaitlyn Thompson, Oakville,ON. He is also survived by sisters Jean Ross,New Glasgow; Dr. Shirley Thompson, St. John’s NL; brother Gerald Thompson, New Glasgow; and special nieces Margaret MacLean, Westville and Maureen Thompson, New Glasgow.
Besides his parents, Wilfred was predeceased by brothers Kelvin, Warren, John and Gordon, and a sister Helen, in infancy.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or service. A private family burial will be led by Rev. Susan Slater at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Port Hawkesbury under the dignified care of Greens Funeral Home. If desired, a memorial donation may be considered for the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society in recognition of the exceptional care and compassion provided to Wilfred and his family over the past weeks. Our heartfelt thanks go to Kyla MacKeigan, RN and Dr. Phillip Cooper and the outstanding palliative team who were truly a gift to our family.
As we move forward without Dad’s physical presence, we will continue to honor him with his traditional toast – As my Swedish friends would say, “Skol!”
