It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father and grandfather, Henry Janzen, on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at the Red River Valley Lodge in Morris, Manitoba at the age of 86 years.
Henry Janzen was born on October 21, 1935 in a log cabin south of Morden, Manitoba in his parents’ home. He was raised by his parents, Elizabeth and John Janzen, as their fourth-born of eleven children. Henry spoke fondly of growing up a farm boy and the adventures he was a part of as he and his siblings made their way to and from their one-room schoolhouse in the Mountain City District.
At an early age, Henry was expected to help and support his family. He left school in his early teens to work on neighbouring farms, sending money home to support his family. Employment opportunities led Henry to Winnipeg to work in factories. Living with his older brother, John, and cousin, Vern Friesen, they made great memories while they found their way in the big city. Working in the sweltering factory conditions, Henry saw the value of education. Following in the footsteps of his sister Elizabeth, he returned to night school to continue his education and complete his Grade 12 equivalent at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. Henry’s desire to learn more moved him to Altona to spend a year at the Elim Bible Institute, a year he fondly remembered. He returned to Winnipeg to work in sales. It was there a coworker set him up on a fateful blind date, where he met the love of his life, Della Petch. They married in 1972, starting their marriage in a home on Wordsworth Way in St. James. Three years later, they moved with little Cheryl and baby John to a farm near Killarney where they would live for the next 40 years. They welcomed baby Diana not long after the move to the farm. Family life on the farm was filled with long summer days working in the fields, winters and springs spent tending to the needs of pigs and cattle. During the school year, Henry would be busy driving the school bus, and would surely be home in time for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Henry was committed to his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour. He was baptized as a young man into the Bergthaler church and raised his family attending Killarney Bay Avenue Mennonite Church. The dinner table was known for passionate discussions on topics of religion and politics, about which there were no shortage of opinions.
He is remembered by his children and grandchildren as one who loved the farm, going for a drive to get ice cream at the end of a week. He was a fan of attending Simon, Mick and John’s Janzen Boys concerts and a willing recipient of new hairstyles from Hannah. Joah has good memories of expeditions with Grandpa to explore every nook and cranny of the farm.
Henry was predeceased by his loving wife, Della, his parents John and Elizabeth (Hoeppner) Janzen, his brothers John, Ben and Peter Janzen, his sister and brother-in-law Katherine (Tina) and John Giesbrecht; and his brother-in-law George Froese.
Henry leaves behind to mourn his daughter Cheryl, his son John (Naomi), and his daughter Diana (So). He is also survived by his grandsons Simon, Mick, and Joah; his granddaughter Hannah; his sisters Elizabeth Froese, Mari (John) Friesen, Lena (John) Epp, Anne (Vic) Sawatzky; brothers Leonard Janzen, Menno (Linda) Janzen; and sisters-in law Mary Janzen (John), Mary Janzen (Ben) and Mary Janzen (Peter); and many nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed – until we meet again.
