Helen Mary Barnhill (MacLeod )
Barnhill, Helen Mary – 82, Belmont.
The family of Helen Mary Barnhill announces her unexpected passing at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre at the age of 82 years on November 19, 2021. Born in Bridgewater, she was the daughter of Dr. James Andrew MacLeod and Muriel Ethel MacLeod.
She is survived by her daughter, Sarah (Martin Whynacht); sons, Todd (Deb) and Jason (Amanda LeBlanc); grandchildren, Mary-Emma, Amy, Cameron, Laurel, Thomas and Rachel; sisters-in-law, Iris Barnhill and Sylvia Barnhill and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Jim.
Helen worked as a switchboard operator at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College until her marriage to Stanley Alison Barnhill in 1966. She considered marriage her vocation and caring for Stan a privilege both in sickness and in health. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage before Stan’s passing on January 1, 2020. Helen’s care ensured Stan was able to live and die in the home where he was born. She was a true homemaker, loving the house as much as Stan did. It gives us peace to know she was able to live there as well until her passing.
Helen was tremendously close with her three children and their spouses. Her six grandchildren brought her immense joy. She was fiercely proud to watch three of them graduate from high school in June of 2021, and was excited to see them begin their higher education.
Helen gave many gifts to her children and grandchildren but two stand out for us. The first was her unflagging work ethic. She believed hard work was its own reward and was always busy, finding joy in cleaning inside and out.
Helen’s other shining example was her cheerful disposition. In the face of health issues, both Stan’s and her own, she remained uncomplaining and optimistic, always appreciative for what she had. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Trevor Locke and everyone in the medical community who cared for our parents over the years. Your work gave us many quality years with our parents and gave them the joy of knowing their beloved grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. There will be no visitation or service. Private interment will be held in Belmont Cemetery. If so desired, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders (information at www.raredisorders.ca/donate-2/) or to charity of choice.
