It is with broken hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Lawlor, RN. With her family and dedicated loving friend Sylvia Healey by her side Helen passed peacefully away undoubtedly feeling the love and respect she truly deserved.
Helen is predeceased by her parents Richard and Catherine, and many other close uncles and aunts in both the Lawlor and Roche families. Helen will be leaving to mourn her brother Loyola, sister-in-law Tina, lifelong companion Oscar Payne, aunt – Millie Lawlor (Frank deceased), cousins Mark Lawlor and family (Patricia, Natasha and Maria), Jeanette Lawlor and family (Shaun and Rogan Betts). She will also be dearly missed by her Renews southside family especially, Mame (Mary Lawlor) and all her Lawlor and Roche cousins and friends across and up the lane, as well as her cousins and their families in the USA.
Helen grew up in Renews and was always proud of her Southern Shore roots. There was never a “time” or occasion in Renews that she missed. If she could possibly attend at all, she was there.
Helen graduated from St. Clare’s School of Nursing in 1967, respected and admired by the whole class. Without a doubt she was the glue that held the class together and continued to do so. After graduation Helen spent the next couple of years at Clare’s but with a yearning to further her career, she went on to complete her Public Health Diploma, BScN and a MHSc. Helen’s name and Public Health nursing are synonymous in our province. Her career path traversed NL, both at the community and Department of Health level. She worked in many areas and communities, but it was the great Northern Peninsula that claimed her as their own. While she officially retired in 2001, it can never be said that she retired from nursing completely – that was NOT Helen.
Helen was a woman of immense strength, intelligence, dedication and wonderful dry sense of humor. These qualities guided her each and every day. For those whose lives Helen has touched, she will have left an indelible mark. Every day of Helen’s life was focused around others. She opened her heart and her home to any and all who needed her support, guidance and advocacy. Nothing was too much for Helen to take on and she was not one to back down from anything or anyone.
We, her family, cannot imagine life without her in our lives. We hope a little bit of Helen lives on in all of us – but there will never be another Helen.
The family would like to thank all those who provided support and care to Helen during her short illness, including the staff of both St. Claire’s and HSC. We are especially grateful for Sylvia’s unwavering love and support and for being there for Helen, always by her side right to the end.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Saturday, June 19, 2021 from 2-9 p.m. and at Fahey’s Funeral Home, Fermeuse, on Sunday, June 20, 2021 from 2-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial from Holy Apostle’s Church, Renews, on Monday, June 21, 2021 at 11 a.m. Wake and funeral service as per COVID-19 protocols.
