Obituary
Hazel J. Davis passed away at Loch Lomond Village on October 25th, 2021. She was in her 96th Year. Born at Grove Hill, Kings County on January 26, 1926, she was a daughter of the late William J. and Jemima (Hosford) Rodgers. Hazel was pre-deceased by her husband, Ernest J. Davis, on Oct. 11, 1994.
She began her working life in Saint John, at Woolworth’s Dept. Store, King Street, followed by a decades’-long career at Sobeys, Loch Lomond Mall, a job she really enjoyed. She and Ernie raised her family on Topeka Street, East, a neighbourhood she’s called home since 1963. Her love of community was reciprocated by her wonderful neighbours. She was an environmentalist at heart, loving and appreciating nature, always. An avid walker, she could often be seen toting a garbage bag to pick up discarded items littering the ditches. She loved travelling, especially to the New England states. Camden and Booth Bay, Me., were among her favourite destinations, along with the Annapolis Valley during apple-blossom time, and to the Hank Snow Museum in Liverpool, N.S. Her travels also took her abroad to England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria and Germany. Hazel loved country music, especially Hank Snow, Charley Pride and Don Williams and was proficient in square, line, clogging and ballroom dancing. She loved dances at the Seniors’ Centre, Saint John City Market, the Saint John Marina, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 69. She was also a talented writer, having penned several poems, some of which were published.
Above all, she cherished her family. Hazel is survived by one daughter, Sandra (Sandy) Davis (Eric Bowen) of Saint John; two sons, Dan Davis (Marcelle) of Gondola Point and Bill Davis (Nancy Martel), of Saint John; three grandsons, Matthew Davis (Bethany Painter) of Quispamsis, Mike Davis (Alana) of Rossland, B.C., and Bradley Davis (Allyson Lamont) of Saint John; and her pride and joy, great-grandson, Henry Davis. She is also survived by one brother, Arnold Rodgers of Saint John; two sisters, Greta Carson of Sus and Doris Graham of Sus Corner; sister-in-law, Hazel Rodgers of Barnesville, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is pre-deceased by one brother, Fred Rodgers and two sisters, Annie Dalling and Ethel Sommerville.
Heartfelt thanks to those at Loch Lomond Village, Willow House, who cared for and gave their love to our mom over the past three years.
A private service is planned with interment to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, 646-2424. Anyone wishing to make a donation in Hazel’s memory is encouraged to consider the Loch Lomond Villa Foundation or the Barnesville Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund. Due to COVID-19 health measures placed on indoor gatherings, all those 12 and older attending visitation and service will be required to wear masks and show proof of vaccination with a piece of government issued ID.
