Gwendolyn Margaret Smith
November 30, 1930– February 21, 2021
It is with peace and love that the family of Gwendolyn Margaret Smith announces her passing on February 21, 2021 at Golden Door Geriatric Centre at the age of 90.
Gwen was born at Binscarth, Manitoba and the family moved to Winnipeg in 1932. She graduated from Kelvin High school. She was proud of her first job as a soda clerk at Sam’s and pursued a career as a bookkeeper at Gregory Cartwright Stationary and Eaton’s.
Mom met her sweetheart and husband Doug of 61 years at Earl Grey Jr. High. Together they built their first home in St. Vital and started a family. For a number of years they owned and operated the Bread Box Bakery. In 1960 they purchased a lot at Bird Lake and built their dream cottage. She was a devoted wife, mom, proud grandma and great-grandma. Mom loved spending time with family and friends at the cottage playing games, listening to music, sharing stories and hosting an annual corn roast. Visitors were always welcome and left with a full belly and a smile.
In her retirement years she enjoyed gardening, weekly bingo and travelling with dad. She looked forward to lunch dates with dear friends reminiscing of special times together. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion – Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ladies Auxiliary where she was a dedicated volunteer with a spirit of giving to help others.
Mom is survived by sons Gary (Tracey), Wayne (Sandra); daughter Lexie (Darrell); grandchildren Jodie (Phil) Didow, Lindsey (Kirsten), Nicole, Bryden (Adriana Todaro), Keenan, Leanne and Cory (Crystal) Letourneau; great-grandson Weston; Sister Evelyn Mullins of Richmond Hill, ON and sister-in-law Jeannine (Herb) Markevich of Calgary AB. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas, parents Robert and Lillian Blakely (nee Sneesby); sister Reta (Jack) Silvester and brother Robert (Eleanor) Blakely.
You can only have one mother, loving kind and true.
No other friend in the world will be so true to you.
For all her loving kindness, she asked for nothing in return.
If the world deserted us, to our mother we could turn.
For those of us who have a mother treasure her with care,
For you will never know her value till you see that she’s not there.
To hear her voice, to see her smile, to sit and talk with her awhile,
To be together in the same old way, would be our dearest wish today.
Our family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sheila Domke and staff at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre for their love, compassion and the excellent care they gave our mom.
In accordance with Public Health restrictions a celebration of Gwen’s life will be announced at a later date. If you so desire, donations may be made in her memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
