DONIA, Gisela Marianne (Weiss) 11 April 1944 Riesa, Germany – 27 July 2021 Peterborough, Ontario. Gisela has watered the last plant and if there is an Eden she will be gardening again with Bert. She shared her love of gardening with her much adored, loved and missed husband Bert (Eber) Donia, who sadly left her much too soon, in July 2016.
Gisela grew up in Cologne, Germany and came to Canada in 1967. With determination she adapted and loved Canada as her new home. She was a press and wedding photographer and photography teacher in North Bay. Unable to pick up the trade again after her move to Peterborough in 1986, she opened a flower store and worked in garden centres. The love of gardening brought her to Apsley where she and Bert lived 20 happy years, rebuilding a home and creating a park like garden. Bert grew the vegetables, Gisela the flowers. In the winter she kept her hands busy knitting and crocheting. She was an avid reader and loved classical music and opera.
Her children Mary Lou, Charles and Jason (Melanie) Ball were her pride and joy. She shared her love with Bert’s children Michael (Kylie), Richard (Maria), Jacqueline and the late Lisa Donia (2004).
The grandchildren were loved and much photographed, David, Nixon, Oliver, Reese, Lauren, Riley, MacKenzie, Zack, Wendel, Redmond and the late Perry. Gisela was the daughter of Bertha and the late Alfred (1977) Weiss. Her younger sister Christa predeceased her in 1999.
A celebration of Gisela’s life will be held at Ashburnham Funeral Home & Reception Centre on Saturday, August 14 at 11 am, with visiting one hour prior (10-11 am) and a reception to follow in the Legacy Room. Reservations are required so please register at AshburnhamFuneral.ca. Private interment in Apsley at a later date.
