It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of George Walter Murphy on June 5 at the age of 58.
Predeceased by his parents V.Gloria Fifield and Lewis Murphy, mother-in-law Josephine McGrath and father-in-law Mike McGrath.
Leaving to mourn his wife of 12 years, Joy (McGrath), sons Aaron and Lewis, daughters Bailey and Krista, stepsons Devin (Shania) and Daniel (Megan), grandson Jack, and stepmother Ann. George will also be remembered by his brothers Lewis (Kay), Brian (Vasuki), Dan (Mi-Kyung), Noel (Nancy), and Kent (Faith), sister Mackenzie (Roger), brothers-in-law Nick (Pam), Mike (Ann-Marie), sister-in-law Michelle (Paul), and his very special brother-in-law Walter, along with a large circle of family and friends.
George loved serving the people of Newfoundland & Labrador. In his youth, he was President of C.B.A.C., a former Citizens Band Radio Club with hundreds of members. He was an organizer for the Pumpkin Patrol, organized toy drives for children at Christmastime, and was involved in numerous community-based organizations.
In the pre-Social Media era, George harnessed the potential of the internet (at the time) seeking signatures province-wide for the 2nd largest petition ever tabled in the House of Assembly for official reading.
He was well known for advocacy with the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices, he also served as M.H.A. for St. John’s East from 2011-2015 as well as acting manager for Jiffy Cabs. Recently, he worked for the Liberal Government and spoke fondly of all members. What made George stand out from many other politicians was his love and devotion of all classes of individuals equally. No matter who he met, he would take a keen interest in that person’s life and would develop a friendship with them. He was well known for helping people – from providing food to medical equipment and always listening to their needs. He was the driving force behind the rebate from Newfoundland Power to the residents of NL as well as a major advocate of the “pull over” law.
He had a great passion for C.B. Radio. He collected and refurbished many rare breeds of radio from far and wide. He loved spending time with family and friends, playing guitar around a firepit and parodying songs which were sure to get a laugh. He loved spending hours by the side of the pond fishing with his sons and making memories with them.
George lived a full and purposeful life. He was a gentle giant with an equally big heart who will be missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing him even for a moment of time.
Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, June 10 and Friday, June 11 from 2-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. Due to limited numbers and following COVID regulations, attendance at the funeral service will be invite only. The funeral service will be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person with the link available above. George’s family would like to thank everyone for the kind messages and outpouring of support, however, please consider sending messages of condolence or making a donation in George’s memory to the memorial fund murphysupportteam@gmail.com instead of traveling long distances for the visitation.
10-4, George, and sing with the angels.
