George’s Obituary
WICKENS, George Smith – 96, of North East Point, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2021 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a short illness. George was born on October 16, 1924 at the Wickens’ family home in Centreville, Cape Sable Island, and was the last surviving member of his family. He was the son of Delbert Charles Wickens and Edith Carlyle Smith. At an early age George showed a great aptitude for all things electric and made that his lifelong career. He started wiring houses on the Island as a teenager and later formed what became George S. Wickens & Son. Into his 90’s, he continued to go to the shop to receive customers and friends and to work on the navigation panels that he invented for use on fishing boats. Outside his work, George’s interest tended towards language, literature, poetry and music. He had a love for the French language which he passed on to his children, grandchildren and even to his great-grandchildren. He loved reading as well as quoting both Shakespeare and the Bible. He had an amazing capacity for memorizing poetry and continued to recite his favourites right to the end. He also wrote poetry, both light and serious, from an early age and has left us with a treasured collection. Music gave him great pleasure all his life, from playing steel guitar and piano to singing bass in the church choir. One of the things that George was best known for was his creative use of language, often humourous and always wise. And, of course, he loved the Blue Jays. George was from an early age a man of faith and was a life-long member of Centreville Baptist Church. George will be fondly remembered by his children, Fred, Edith (Babe), Deborah (Jim), Martha (Allan) and Barbara (Randy); his grandchildren Mark and Quent; Ken, Peter, David and Thomas; Joseph, Beth and Jesse; James, Sarah, Ruth, and John; Carolyn and Michael; his great-grandchildren Abby and Nate; Jack, Harry, Ethan and Violet; Ajax, Duncan, Ryland, Charlotte and Thomas; Emma, Ryan, Samuel and Lucas; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Gladys; sister, Dorothy; brothers, Charles, Murray, Harris, Hartley and Arthur; and special friend, Mildred Blades. George was privileged to be able to live his life out in his own home, and in his later years that was only possible because of the excellent care given to him by the VON. Arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. A private family service will be held at the old Centreville Church (Faith Christian) on Wednesday, September 15 at 2pm. There will be no visitation. Donations can be made to the VON or Oceanview Christian Academy. Online condolences may be sent to huskilson@ns.aliantzinc.ca or you may sign the guest book at www.huskilson.net
