DALES, Florence Eva
March 22, 1926 – June 16, 2021
We honour Florence, devoted wife to Rex and loving mother to her four children, Sandra Dowhaniuk (Ron), Ron Dales (Pauline Holmes), Laurie O’Byrne (Brock), and Shelley Dales. She cherished her grandchildren, Kim Dowhaniuk (Ivan Sampson), Jay Dowhaniuk (Brianne), Kelly Dales, Shea Dales and Ryley O’Byrne; as well as her two great grandchildren, Charley and Tucker Dowhaniuk. She was also a caring and devoted aunt to many nieces and nephews, including Deborah Davidson, Donna Spooner, Brian Kernaghan, Diane White, Holly Durand and all the ‘Onoway girls’.
Florence always spoke fondly and told great stories of her youth growing up in various parts of Saskatchewan including Mildred, Big River and Christopher Lake, and the many dear friends she has been blessed with.
Before moving to Edmonton where she eventually met and married Rex, she helped the war effort by working at an airplane building factory outside of Prince Albert.
Florence generously gave her time and resources to her community. She was a long-time member of St. Timothy’s Anglican Church and the Anglican Christian Women’s Association (ACW), including two terms of service as president of the ACW. There were many charities close to Florence’s heart that she and Rex gave generously to; among them were Camp He Ho Ha, Winnifred Stewart Association and the Grey Nuns Hospital. As all her children were born at the Royal Alex, they donated to the hospital’s foundation of the Florence Eva Dales Postpartum Unit. Throughout her life, Florence generously gave to St. Timothy’s Anglican church as well as numerous private individuals and organizations.
Florence loved curling, aquasize and golfing as well as spending time with family at the cottage at Waskesiu, Prince Albert National Park and in Maui, Hawaii.
Florence has been a model of courage, graciousness and practicality in the way that she lived her life as well as how she faced her death. She was relieved to be given the power and dignity, at this stage of her life, to make end of life decisions and have them honoured when so much else was beyond her control or ability. We will all miss her and will hold her with love in our hearts forever. When we see ‘darling’ little birds or the beauty of trees and nature we will be thinking of our beloved Florence.
