Eugene Chorneyko 2021

Eugene’s Obituary
Eugene George Chorneyko passed away at his home in Kamsack, SK, on April 1, 2021, at the age of 54 years.
Eugene was born December 30, 1966, at the Canora Union Hospital to George and Eldine (nee Shuparski) Chorneyko. Eugene was the second child in a family of five.
He attended elementary and high school in Norquay and graduated in 1984. He then obtained his Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Regina and began his first teaching assignment in Endeavour, SK. He then moved on to teach at the West Bench Hutterite Colony in the Eastend area, and in the following year, he taught in the town of Eastend. Then wanting to be closer to home, Eugene accepted a position in Prairie River, where he taught for the next two years. Following that, he worked in the bush by Hudson Bay, mostly operating a skidder. Eugene then returned to teaching, this time at Pelican Lake First Nation, where he spent the next decade. He often took his students on canoeing and camping expeditions. Eugene then relocated to Kamsack, SK, and purchased a house. He split his teaching duties between KCI and Pelly School, where he taught Industrial Arts. Eugene then transferred to teaching in a grade two classroom at Canora Junior Elementary School. He would often go snowshoeing with his students and played his guitar for them, incorporating music into the school day. Staff and students alike enjoyed Eugene’s musical talents immensely. He shared his love for music, and his talents for engaging children, and they had the wonderful opportunity to experience music festivals each year. In his final year of teaching, he taught at Chief Gabriel Cote Educational Complex on Cote First Nation.
For several years, Eugene spent his summer holidays driving a gravel truck for Eastside Gravel and Broda Construction. He also enjoyed helping with the cattle and grain operations on the family farm. He was a very skilled welder and welded many things around the farm.
Eugene loved the outdoors, and was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed snowmobiling. In 1988, he shot the second largest white-tailed deer in the province for that year.
As a young boy, he played goalie for Norquay minor hockey, and continued to play goal later in life, playing with the Canora Flames. Eugene also enjoyed curling, both school curling with kids and bonspieling.
While in Prairie River, Eugene played bass guitar in a Ukrainian band, The Twilight Ramblers, often playing at weddings and Ukrainian New Year’s dances in the area. At his parent’s 25th wedding anniversary celebration, Eugene brought the band to play in the Chorneyko yard. It was a memorable night for all!
Eugene was an inspiration with many talents and the impact he made on the lives he touched will remain his legacy. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Eugene was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Eugene Chorneyko; his maternal grandparents, Mike and Lena Shuparski; a nephew at birth, John Peter Chorneyko; and a cousin, Roxanne Burtnack.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his parents, George and Eldine Chorneyko; Baba, Olga Chorneyko; and siblings: Cheryl (Rodney) Bork, Sharon (Elmer) Schroeder, Sheriese Chorneyko, and Barry (Melissa) Chorneyko; and many adoring nephews and nieces: Aidan, Claire, Gabrielle, Kieran, Dominic, and Callum Schroeder and Joseph, Catherine, Lucy, Anna and Michael Chorneyko; as well as his extended family and many friends.
