Obituary
James Emerson Barron
Ingonish
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend Emerson Barron, on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in Ingonish on March 29, 1932, he was the son of the late James and Mary Grace (Doyle) Barron.
Emerson spent his life in the community. He was a crew member of the Cape Queen and he fished with the Crow’s Nest Trap Company, his family’s business, for many years. When fishing season ended, Emerson worked in Halifax, Prince Edward Island and Ontario. After he retired from fishing, he operated a tour boat, taking visitors out to jig fish and watch for whales. He worked as a commissionaire at the Keltic Lodge and went on to work at the Wreck Cove Hydroelectric project as security and ambulance driver. He also spent five years as a janitorial worker for Parks Canada.
Emerson was a devout Catholic and volunteered thousands of hours serving on numerous committees; helping to maintain the graveyard, bury the dead and fundraise for the church. Emerson loved to listen to Celtic music, as well as entertain his family and friends with delicious home-cooked meals. He had a warm and engaging personality and he was always in good spirits. He generously helped many people in need. Emerson loved life, Christmas and any occasion that gave him the opportunity to bring family and friends together. A marvelous story teller, Emerson loved engaging with people; he was a tradition bearer. The family and the village of Ingonish have lost a keeper of our stories.
Emerson is survived by his brothers Francis (Peggy), Mickey (Carolyn), Isadore, Gordon (Valerie), his sisters Alice (Sinclair) Lewis, Agnes (Fred) Doucette, Barbara (Ken) Donovan, Kathleen (Melvin) Gwynn, plus many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Emerson was predeceased by his brother Billie and his wife Josephine, his sister Evelyn and her husband, Maurice Egan.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jobes Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. The family wants to thank the doctors, nurses and medical staff at the Cape Breton Regional hospital. Special thanks to the doctors and the home-care nurses from Highlands Medical Clinic. The nurses came weekly to Emerson’s home to provide medical support and comfort.
The funeral and celebration of Emerson’s life will be announced in the New Year. Donations may be made to the St. Peter’s Catholic Church graveyard fund or Palliative Care. Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
