MYHILL, Elaine (nee McCoy)
Passed away at Trenton Memorial Hospital on Sunday, April 4th, 2021. Elaine Myhill, of Bayside, was in her 91st year. Daughter of the late Alfred and Ethal McCoy, she will be forever loved by her daughter Rowena Myhill-Shadrack (son-in-law Daryl) of Hastings, and her son David Myhill (daughter-in-law Trish) of Bayside, as well as grandchildren Kristen, Danielle and Michael (Mike). Elaine is also survived and sadly missed by brother, Raymond McCoy, niece, Janet Wager, and cousin, Maureen Soukoreff. She is predeceased by her sister, Olive Yateman, brother-in-law, Walter Yateman, and sister-in-law, Lillian McCoy.
Elaine first worked for Ontario Hydro and moved to Australia when she wed. In Australia she had beloved friends who acted as family. She helped start one of the first women’s groups in her area, and raised her children as a single mother under difficult circumstances. She returned to her childhood community and much missed, Canadian family, in the late 70’s. She was a lifetime Bible Student and travelled to Israel several times. Elaine was an anti-evangelist, and didn’t believe in converting anyone, or preaching. She prefered limited public praying, and avoided deriving personal authority from God or religion. She recognized no arbiter or structural authority between her and God, hence she never attempted to convert anyone including her children, friends, or family, however, with any sincere question she felt compelled to answer as best she could, and those questions could result in highly researched, in-depth responses. Her position was always that of a learning student, not a teacher, yet her opinion and research was commonly sought by others. A religious study group she once founded was comprised of passionate people separated by their diverse opinions. They talked in her circle as equals, without a podium, gently bringing people together. Later, some traveled to Canada to seek her fellowship. The book, «Daniel the Beloved of Jehovah» by R. E. Streeter was her favourite, and one of her final wishes was that others interested in bible study read it.
Elaine was an accomplished painter and instilled this passion in others. She was an excellent listener, a truly gentle woman, and a sweet soul, who expected little and took pleasure in the joys of her family and a good religious discussion.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation arrangements have been made with the John R. Bush Funeral Home, 80 Highland Ave., Belleville (613-968-5588). A private graveside service will be held at the Belleville Cemetery. In Elaine’s memory, memorial donations to the Trenton Memorial Hospital would be appreciated.
