CRANFIELD, Earl Robert. QC, UEL
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Earl Robert Cranfield, QC, UEL.
In a most remarkable and peaceful way, Earl Robert was ushered into heaven at St. Joseph’s Hospital
on November 10th, 2021 at 3:40pm at the age of 80 years, surrounded by family and friends.
A devoted husband, best friend, faithful life partner, cribbage opponent, dance partner and sweetheart,
to the late Margaret-Anne Cranfield (1942-2018), an adored and dedicated father to Gordon (Shelley)
of Toronto, Lianne, and Kathleen (Billy), of Whitehorse Yukon and a proud, fun loving ‘papa’ of
Mary-Jane (Lianne), Hazel and Angus (Kathleen & Billy). Earl was the eldest and much loved brother to
Alan Cranfield (Debbie), Bruce Cranfield (daughter Selayna) as well as a loving son and caregiver of the late
Doris Cranfield (1921-2021) & father Earl K. Cranfield. Grandson of Edith and Russell Embury.
A kind, gentle and generous spirit, he will be missed by many, including life-long friend Peter Hampson,
cousins David, Carine, Alex, Steve (Val) & John Redmond, The Taugher’s and many more who gathered
together with Earl and Mags in their living room. Lifetime neighbours with the O’Malley’s, the Cuddies
& the McKays in Hamilton, as well as The Hampsons, Watts, Keiths, and crew at Campbell’s Landing where
visits, boat rides (and stories) were long, laughter rang across the lake, birthdays were shared on the dock,
and friendships were made, in Muskoka on Rankin Island, in Beaver Bay.
Earl was a dedicated lawyer and was called to the Bar in 1968 and appointed as Queens Council in 1980.
Practicing until his final days on Hughson Street in Hamilton Ontario, he practiced with integrity and
devotion to the profession. He was a proud Hamiltonian and a devoted Tiger Cats fan. An alumni of
Hill Park High School(«Crunch»), McMaster University and Osgoode Hall.
A committed supporter of the Wave Warriors Dragon Boat team on Hamilton Bay, steadfast to the
sisterhood as their crash boat driver, a friend and a protector. (One paddle. One heart. One stroke…
with a hug!). A parishioner at Church of the Ascension, grateful for his friends at the weekly coffee
meet-ups over these recent years. Earl had a wonderfully subtle sense of humour, and a great
appreciation for music, film and photography.
Orchestrated by Margaret-Anne, his beloved angel, Kathie (Gerry), Anne (Kurt), Reverend John and
Gerry QC came together to provide special support in all things during this challenging transition with
the family. We continue to be grateful for their support and friendship. We also thank Paul Dermody
at this time for guiding our family through these upcoming days.
Earl was a true gentleman who left his mark in a bright light of integrity and humility, honour, loyalty,
and thoughtfulness… a true Legacy of Love.
1.2.3…. Thank you, Dad!
“I’d love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding…”
John O’Donahue’s “Unfinished Poem”:
Visitation will be postponed until further notice, as we will look toward the springtime.
