Dr S Clair MacLeod D FRCSC FACOG 19332021

Dr. S. Clair MacLeod, M.D., F.R.C.S.(C), F.A.C.O.G
1933-2021
It is with sadness the
family of Dr. S. Clair MacLeod, age 87, Sheldrake Lodge, Hubley, NS
announces his passing on Sunday, August 1, 2021 in the QEII Health
Sciences Centre, Halifax.
Clair was born on
September 19, 1933, in Bonshaw PEI. He was born prematurely and kept
warm in a box by the kitchen wood stove. Despite all the odds, he not
only survived but thrived. He was predeceased by his parents, Stephen
and Ruth (Villett) MacLeod; wife, Nola (Clarke) MacLeod; son-in-law,
Colin MacLean and brother, Jack MacLeod. He is survived by his four
children, Ruth (Shawn) Port Williams; Marilla, Halifax; Kempton
(Beth), Mississippi and David (Karen), Moncton; grandchildren, Katie,
Mollie, Lewis, Rebecca, Camden, Emma Kate, Jack and
Noah.
Clair left Prince of
Wales College in 1954 and continued on to Dalhousie Medical School
where he was honored with many awards and prizes including the
University Gold Medal. He continued his post graduate work at
Dalhousie and Toronto Women’s College Hospital to complete
his degree in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1964. In 1965, he,
Nola and baby Ruth lived in Australia, where Clair received the
McLaughlin Travelling Fellowship to study female endocrinology at the
Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Clair had a
prestigious medical career and took pride in his many accomplishments.
He helped many couples over the years with fertility struggles and
established the first fertility clinic in Halifax. For over 10 years
in Halifax he was a staff member of the VG Hospital, Grace Maternity
Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary. He also continued to lecture at
Dalhousie Medical School and was voted Professor of the year by the
graduating class of 1971. Moving to the village of Port Williams in
1976, he continued his private practice and delivered many more
babies. He worked as Chief of Staff at the Valley Regional Hospital
from 1982 to 1995 and finished his career as the Deputy Registrar with
the NS College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1999.
Clair was a consummate
entertainer. He tackled cooking the same way he did most things, with
hard work and by perfecting his skills. Clair loved presenting great
food to family and the many friends that he and Nola gathered over the
years. His Christmas Eve fish chowder and hot lobster dip were looked
forward to by many.
Clair spent his
retirement years with Nola, playing golf with friends, spending
winters in Florida, participating in a gourmet cooking club, watching
hockey games at Acadia and enjoying life in his Annapolis Valley
home.
Clair was very proud
of his grandchildren’s many accomplishments and enjoyed
watching them grow up and spending time with them at home, in Florida
and the Darnley cottage. To them, he will always be affectionately
known as Poopa.
Dementia is a
challenging road to walk down with a parent. You tend to lose little
pieces of them bit by bit, so that by the time they actually leave the
physical world, they have been gone from your family’s life
for quite a while.
Dad’s
network of friendships became much smaller as his dementia progressed.
Not all understood the complexity that was part of his disease. To
those who remained supportive of him and his children, we thank you.
We are especially grateful to his compassionate care givers and the
friends who went above and beyond to support our family and Clair on
this difficult journey. Heartfelt thanks go to the staff of Sheldrake
Lodge, your support and exceptional care has been truly
appreciated.
His children,
grandchildren, extended family and friends will think of him whenever
they raise a good glass of red, enjoy a delicious meal or walk the
beach on his beloved PEI.
Donations in memory
can be made to support dementia care with the Alzheimer Society of
Nova Scotia
A private family
service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted
to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services,
Kentville.
