Dr. Richard Tanner of Simcoe, Ontario
September 2, 1937 – June 29, 2021
Dr. Richard Tanner was born in 1937 in Stockton-on-Tees, England. His parents, both teachers, moved to Bedford in 1946 where he attended school. In 1955 he entered Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London, England, and qualified MB BS in 1962, subsequently gaining diplomas in obstetrics and anesthesia, and joined a group practice in Twickenham, near London; back in the days when a GP truly was a General Practitioner.
In 1973 he married his love and guiding light Krystyna, and they emigrated to Canada in October 1973 where Richard had been offered a position to join Dr. Blackwell in Bradford and Newmarket. He worked in partnership with Dr. Blackwell until 1984 when he changed to independent practice. He retired from full time work at the end of 2005 and moved to Simcoe, ON in 2006 where he did some part time work and enjoyed semi-retirement and eventually full-time retirement. He enjoyed pretty much any outdoor activity, whether it was skiing, golf (poorly), photography, travel in company with Krystyna with whom he also shared a love of music, especially opera and piano.
He is survived by his children from his first marriage Jane, David, Simon, Robert, and Amy and by Krystyna and their son, Steven, all of whom have lit up our lives with the special qualities and achievements, and by his brother Andrew (Christie) who is also a physician.
The family gives heartfelt thanks for all the wonderful support from friends and neighbours in Simcoe; from social support services and most especially Dr. Bill Wynveen and Carolyn (medical secretary), and Dr. Potvin and her caring oncology team at London Health Sciences Centre.
