Dr. Joseph Kaspi
Surrounded by family and caregivers, Dr. Joseph Kaspi passed away peacefully in his 96th year on September 27, 2021. Son of the late David and Sarah Kaspi, he is predeceased by his late brother Gershon, sister Shifrah, beloved wife Shirley Kaspi, and son Cyril Kaspi. He leaves behind his brother Eliyahu Caspi and wife Judy of Tel Aviv, and his children Terry Kaspi Reiss and Moshe Reiss, Dr. Vicky Kaspi and Dr. David Langleben, and Dan Elituv, as well as his grandchildren Leora and Benjamin Guez, Erin and Jordan Scott, Jake and Josh Elituv, and Ian, Julia and Hayley Langleben, and his great-grandchildren James, Nicole, Noah, Liam, and Charlotte, as well as special friend Martha Christman. A former Captain in the Israeli Army, he fought in the war of Independence which created the State of Israel. After a worldwide tour post officers’ school, he visited Montreal and met Shirley, who he married just a few weeks later. In Montreal, he taught at Solomon Schechter Academy and Herzliah High School. He then chose to pursue his PhD in Hebrew Literature, which he obtained in 1969 at University of Texas at Austin. He was a man of charity and humour, who had encyclopaedic knowledge of Torah, classical music, and literature. He was warm and friendly to all. We are grateful for the help and support of Dr. Ruby Friedman, Dr. Mark Eisenberg and Dr. David Amdursky, as well as to the amazing team of loving and competent caregivers, Minda, Sam, Aleta and Peter who were so kind to him in his final days. Thank you to the devoted doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at the Jewish General Hospital, and the supportive staff of the CLSC, Mount Sinai and Nova.
A strictly private graveside service and strictly private shiva. Contributions in Joseph’s memory may be made to the Shirley and Joseph Kaspi Memorial Fund, c/o of the Jewish General Hospital Foundation, (514) 340-8251.
