Jim was a student at St. Bonaventure’s College and besides excellence in academics, participated in the music and sports programs there. Among other things he was a member of the Senior Inter-Collegiate Hockey Championship Team of 1939.
He completed his studies in Dentistry at Dalhousie University, graduating in 1948. During those university years he was involved in the sports program and played trumpet in the University band. He practiced dentistry in St. John’s until 2007.
He was active in the Provincial and National Dental Associations during his early to mid years and set up a ‘retired’ dentist luncheon group a number of years ago.
He was a long-time member of the St. John’s Rotary Club, joining in 1957, and especially enjoyed his fireside group, The Tanglers. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris Award.
Until the last days of his life, he enjoyed playing chess and keeping in touch with friends via the computer. A devoted husband and father, he took great delight in family gatherings of all sorts. He was a prayerful man, who attended daily Mass until prevented from doing so by ill health.
Our thanks to Nurse April Adams of the Community Supports Program, who provided invaluable assistance and compassion over the last 11 months. Thank you to Dr. Matthew Ryan, Dad’s family physician, for his attentive and compassionate care.
We are grateful for the existence of Eastern Health’s ‘in-home’ Palliative Care program and especially, the support this week of Candace from the “Paramedics Providing Palliative Care Program”; all of which allowed Dad to spend his final months at home.
Arrangements care of Cauls Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. Due to the ongoing pandemic, there will be no visitation. A private family service will take place. No flowers by request. Donations in Dad’s memory may be made to The Gathering Place, or “Choices For Youth”.
Jim lived by the words of Micah.
“He has told you what is good; to act justly; to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God”.
