Doreen Emma Fryer (nee Aljoe) passed away peacefully, at home in the presence of family, after almost 88 years of blessing us with her presence. A wonderful mother to Scott(Susan), Tim(Laurie), Shelley(Larry), Lori & Derek, constantly providing her unwavering support and love – Mom will be dearly missed.
Family was always Doreen’s focus, beginning with her 11 siblings from her father Lorne (“Bucky”) and mother Helen (“Lena”) McDonald, who have predeceased her. She is survived by her sisters Ada(Harry), Beatrice(Hartmut), Sharon and Helen and her sister-in-law Carol. She is also predeceased by her sisters Evelyn, Lorna, Norma and brothers Bill, Art, Vern and Murray.
Her grand and great-grandchildren were truly the apples of her eye. Erin(Jay), Meghan, Stephanie(Michael), Michael, Tessa, Hallie, Connor, Cullen(Samarah), Brandon(Jan), Lauren(Steve), Henry, Lily, Bayley, Tyler, Cole and Ethan know how precious the time was that they spent with their affectionately nicknamed EIO Grandma, Ghandi or Gramma Muffin. She was also a much beloved Aunt to an abundance of nieces and nephews from both sides of our family.
The 7th child, of the Aljoe clan of 12, Doreen was born in Durham Ontario but raised her immediate family in Collingwood. Doreen deftly managed to combine a working career with a busy family situation, first with Bell Canada and then later Sears among other places. Her lovely singing voice was always a welcomed sound to any who were lucky enough to hear her sing. She was also an avid curler, bowler and golfer who excelled at all of her chosen sports.
While we were blessed with her “family is primary” focus, Doreen’s boundless energy, and generous, caring and friendly demeanor allowed her to pursue many interests and have many close friendships. Too numerous to note here, we know that, although her friends have lost a loyal and dear friend, they will hold onto wonderful memories of many fun times enjoyed together.
We know that Mom is resting peacefully now but will continue to watch down upon us in hopes that we enjoy our life experiences as much as she was able to. Mom remarked many times about how lucky she was for many reasons. Being the 7th born of the 7th child, on the 7th day of the 7th month was a special reason why, but we know from being the beneficiaries of the love Mom shared with us that we were truly the lucky ones!
The family wishes to thank everyone for your sincerely appreciated support during this sorrowful time. We also would like to thank Dr. Tara Gignac, Dr. Kendra Smith and Dr. Langford for the care and attention they helped us provide to Mom.
Funeral and service arrangements are still being finalized and they will be announced at a later date.
We would appreciate in lieu of flowers that your generosity be shared with Hospice Georgian Triangle – Campbell House.
