DAVID WINSTON SELIG
January 18, 1941 – July 28, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that the family of David Winston Selig announce his passing at the age of 80, on July 28, 2021, in Hospice Halifax, with his wife, Joan by his side. He was born on Jan.18, 1941 to the late Reginald and Hazel Selig. David set up deep roots in his beloved Bedford community throughout his lifetime. Always devote and giving to his family, friends and community. Whatever was asked of him, his response was always ….I’ll be right there! David could not wait to turn 18, so that he could join the Bedford Volunteer Fire Dept. His first step in a lifetime of community service. He served in the BVFD for a total of 32 years; 12 of those as Chief. Over the years, David served on the Board of Directors of: Town of Bedford Incorp., Brookside Cemetery, and Scott Manor. He was an active member in the Bedford United Church where he participated in hospital visits with fellow members. He was “Santa” for many years with the BVFD and Bedford’s Parade of Lights. A job he thoroughly loved! David worked for Maritime Tel & Tel for 28 years. He started as a mechanic in the shop and worked his way up through Installation and Repair to Managerial positions. He believed he was very fortunate to retire at the young age of 50. He took great pleasure in spending time with friends and road trips with his buddies. He and Joan enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. Grampy was tree fort builder, fixer of all things and chauffeur to sporting activities, appointments, etc. He was always there. A natural joker and a people person, David always made whomever he met feel comfortable and important. If you met Dave, you liked him instantly and all who knew him, loved him for his kind and accepting spirit.
David is survived by the love of his life, Joan, wife of 41 years; son, Peter, Peace River, AB; daughter, Jennifer (Peter Howarth), Pembroke, ON; daughter, Darlene Armsworthy (Barry Timmins); and son, Paul Armsworthy (Carolyn Duke); grandchildren Keegan, Makale, and Mulu; Breanne and Joshua; Riley, Justin and Lauren; brother, Peter (Elaine) and sister, Heather (Brian Bowers) and three nieces and five nephews.
A private family burial will take place this week. A Celebration of Life Service and reception will be held at the Bedford United Church on Monday, Sept. 20 at 1:30pm. A public live stream of the service can be viewed on the Bedford United Church All Are Welcome All The Time facebook account at the same time as the live service.
The family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers, nurses and doctors at Hospice Halifax who provided the utmost care and compassion to David and our family during his last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory can be made to Hospice Halifax, Bedford United Church, or Scott Manor House.
