Cody (Faron) Black Kettle – Poosaapinii (Cat Eyes)
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Cody (Faron) Black Kettle, age 46 years old. His common-law wife Maheengun Quaysance Edgard was by his side. He was from the Eagle Rib Clan and Running Away Buffalo Clan. Cody was a proud and loving father of Mervin C. Black Kettle, Paige Black Kettle, Sierra Black Kettle, Bear Melting Tallow, Thunder Eagle Speaker-Black Kettle, and Rose Eagle Speaker-Black Kettle. Along with his children, Cody is survived by his Mother Monica Muskego (Robert), His sisters Michelle Black Kettle and Joanne Good Eagle; Brothers Robbie Black Kettle, Stan Whiteman Sr., Tyrone (Hutch) Sitting Eagle, A.J, P.J Black Kettle and David Muskego, His aunties Yvonne Conrad, Joanne Red Old Man (Duane), Doris Black Kettle and his uncle Kelly Good Eagle; Adopted siblings Ervina Black Kettle (Horton), Derrill Black Kettle Jr., His Goddaughter Verlina Whiteman; Adopted children Alicia (Sky) Eli, Skyleesha White Man, Malayia and Christopher Conrad-Red Gun. Cody had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He had a big heart for children and was always so happy to see and teach them the ways of our culture. Extended family includes the Black Kettles, Sitting Eagle, Bear Chief, Scabbyrobes, Bear Robe, Weasel Head, Calf Robe, Crow Chief, Weasel Moccasin, First Rider, Many Guns, Sleigh, Star Light, Tail Feathers, Goodstriker, Wadsworth, Beebe, Rabbit Carrier, Many Shots, Rides at the Door, Olney. The family apologies for any adopted children and family we have missed.
Cody was born at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. He had a very special relationship with his grandmother/mother Maggie Black Kettle who raised him and Michelle, Maggie raised Cody to know both the traditional (Nitsitapi) ways and the Catholic teachings. As a kipiitaih’pooka, he understood Blackfoot fluently and he had a special relationship with the kipiitaakiis. He considered Calgary his ‘home’ and lived his whole life there. He was a very competitive basketball player, leading to a City Championship with the PICSS high school basketball team. He had also attended a High School Basketball tournament in Denver, Colorado. Later in life, he would go on to coach basketball teams. He spent a lot of time playing basketball with his ‘brothers’ at the Calgary Indian Friendship Center and Plains Indian Cultural Survival School (PICSS). He held various jobs including Youth Coordinator at CIFC, demolition, and asbestos removal.
Cody was well-known and highly respected for his powerful singing voice and his ability to compose songs; singing was his ultimate passion. He was recognized as a lead singer and was always called on by various drum groups. His drumming career began in 1990 at Plains Indian Cultural Survival School with the teachings of Stan Whiteman Sr. where the PICSS drum group had the honor of making a recording in Phoenix, Arizona with Canyon Records. His drum groups included Plains Indians Singers, Star Society, Da Bad Boyz, Big Guns, Hammer Hill, 940, Broken Knife, and various other drum groups. He traveled all over North America to participate and compete in powwows which led to many drumming championship titles. He was also asked for arena direct powwows on a few occasions. He considered many drummers and dancers from the powwow trail as his ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’.
The Calgary Stampede was a yearly event that Cody looked forward to and prepared for. He stayed throughout the 10 days in the Indian Village where he helped his family and other tipi owners. During the Calgary Stampede he participated in the Powwow, Grandstand shows caravans and parades.
Cody has been welcomed into the spirit world by his grandparents Nicolas and Maggie Black Kettle, auntie/mother Daphne (Tuffy) Good Eagle, father Robert Myron, uncle Derald Black Kettle, brothers Mervin Good Eagle, Brian Black Kettle, Emmett Black Kettle, and Chris Conrad, sister Robin Black Kettle, adopted father Herman Cutter, and niece Mariah Scalplock.
Cody really loved and was proud of all his children. He was well respected and extremely loved by many people. He will be missed for his beautiful singing, sense of humour, story-telling, teasing, kindness, hugs, love, and especially his laughter.
Cody will be brought home to his auntie Joanne & Duane Red Old Man residence on Thursday, March 18, 2021, at 4:00 pm. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021, at 11:00 am at the Holy Trinity Church, Siksika Nation. Followed by the burial service at the Little Washington Cemetery. The family would like to encourage everyone planning to attend to use COVID safety practices to help keep everyone safe.
